So a couple weeks ago coming home from work, when shiffting down gears for a stop sign the shift lever bolt broke. Limped the bike home with alot of gas and a little bit of clutch. Put the bolt back in and was not able to shift gears like it should. I would have to rock the bike back and forth and then i could only shift between gears 3-5.

took the bike to the guy who fixed my stator. He use to work for harley as a master tech.

got a call from him today saying my clutch is pretty much shot and the parts alone would be over $1000.

anyone have some insight? I know i didn't give much detail.

he mentioned something about needle bearing on the race is completely shot and the clutch pads need replaced as well.... says you can buy them as a "kit"

My bike is a 2009 12scg.

any help or info would be appreciated..

thanks in advance

You should be able to shift through all the gears without the engine running and rocking back and forth a little. If it will not shift through all the gears you have internal damage somewhere to the gearset or shift drum. (trans) the clutch being bad wouldn't change anything if the engine isn't running.

meoff: what festivagt said above and in addition, these are pretty robust clutches and your mechanic is referring to the main support bearing assembly at the clutch pack drum where it is mounted to the input shaft. extremely rare for it to be on the way out on a 2009. regarding clutch pads he's referring to the driven friction plates which are part of the clutch pack. they cannot be visually inspected unless he removed the primary cover, compressed the clutch pack diaphragm spring, and visually inspected the friction plates. if your bike has seen abuse and/or very high mileage anything is possible but on a 2009 i would tend to think the mechanicals are in good order. something seems to coincide with your broken bolt, the ride home, and now this shifting issue.

$1000 just in parts? I think not.

A barnett clutch kit $100 online. Factory from the dealer clutch disk $199 (i just priced them)

I bet you just need to roll the bike and shift a bit hard to get it back into the lower gears. The transmission assembly on these things are very crude and in no way smooth. Its my expirience these bikes dont like to be shifted without moving and running. Rocking back and forth doesnt suffice. Tell your mechanic to shove it, thats insanity what he is telling you.

1st gear is the biggest sprocket closest to end of shaft, 1st gear is only two sprockets engaged hence quick acceleration. 3-5 gears are combined thru sliding/fixed dog gears. if hes sayin the shaft races are blown, which usually have needle bearings then yeah it'll cost around the average buellers paycheck to fix it.

Thanks for all the replies guys...

Im going to stop over there tomorrow when i wake up (i work midnights)

Hopefully i can get more info. I had just woken up when i talked to him..

Ill try to take some pics of what i see.

Update:

so i stopped by the guys shop today to see what was going on.

he showed me what he was talking about on the phone

so basically the "basket" the primary chain attaches to has a needle bearing in it that goes on the race. that needle bearing has ALOT of play in it. When you put the "basket" that holds the friction plates inside the other basket you can get like 1/4" of deflection.

now he wants to replace both "baskets" because he is concerned with getting both sets of bearing out of the baskets.

He also said that he got the bike into 1st gear and when he started it and had the clutch in it made an awful noise.

He also said once he got the clutch out he was able to shift the bike easily. Idk any more detail than this.

Anyone have any thoughts on that? Does it even make sense what i typed? lol Im not expert or novice on bike clutches or primaries.

Does anyone know where i can get the bearings for both "baskets" and also if needed where i can get new "baskets"?

If i can get the bearings ill try to press the bearings out at work. Im also assuming these bearings are a press fit...

any insight, advice or thoughts would be appreciated. I am out of my league on this one.

Thanks again guys.

When my clutch was shot, I had it replaced for $600. That's parts and labor. The parts were from an HD dealership too.

Looks like my bike is all fixed. I will pick it up this afternoon.

The 03 clutch assemblies worked and fixed the issue.

Just wanted to give an update.
