I was thinking of purchasing a go pro. There's a few models of them. I want to hear about the pros and cons. Or any other systems comparable to the go pro. How's the video. Ruggedness? Are they pretty tough. Any info would be appreciated

I have the hero 3 silver and im very happy with it. Most reviews and comparisons will put the hero3 silver/black right up there with the sony contour as an alternative. I personally like the contours shape better but meh. Gopro now has a free app for smart phones that act as a remote control and file viewer which is a huge plus! Also gopro customer support is ****ing awesome!!! I scratched my lense just a little contacted them about repair, they dont repairs but offered a 40% off a new unit with exchange. Not a bad deal considering im the idiot who dropped it.

The only issue i see is the battery life a few hours if you dont use it sucks. Invest in the external battery add on makes it much more usable or buy a few batteries. They use to be buggy but recent updates make it pretty solid.

Only complaint is the wifi defaults to on when changing battery or after a charge. Then it just drains itself down when you arent using it unless you manually shut the wifi off

I have the contour, ( not made by sony) its been great. Little cheaper then the gopro, still 1080 at 30fps and way easier to operate and also has smart phone app via bluetooth. Certain packages come with free mounts and 16gig sd card. I researched both cams and chose contour mainly because its water proof right out of the box without added cases.

I have the silver and its great! Use it with my helmet mount all the time. Also if you have the android app you can download the video straight to your phone, then send it to youtube, facebook or whatever.

There is no difference between the silver and the old hero2 so if you can deal with the larger size and are ok with used, I would get one of those.

If you go with a gopro, invest in the add-ons. Especially the rear view screen... Without it, you have no idea what you are aiming at, and often times wind up with ****ty footage because of it. Also, they make an extended life battery backpack for it, the only con to that is you cant use the rear view screen in conjunction with it...I have the Hero 3 Silver, and I have 2 regular batteries plus the extended battery pack. the two batteries lasted about an hour and a half combined last weekend at a full charge...

Didnt the gopro 3 have 1080 at 60 fps whereas the gopro2 was 1080 at 30? I think that was the only difference besides price

Thanks for all the comments. I'll look at bestbuy and online for some specs on them. And figure out which is best for me.

Just a suggestion, if you are looking for go-pros, see if there is a Pep Boys local to you. The one I work at used to carry go-pros and add ons. We have since stopped carrying them and were selling them at a pretty decent discounted price. I got my hero 2 for like 60 bucks with my employee discount. I think regular price was just over $100.

I have the GoPro hero 2 and I love it. The only problem that I ever had with it was the mic went bad and made a horrible loud noise in all videos. So I went back to Best Buy and the gave me a brand new one. That was 1yr and 1 month after I bought it.

I have the Hero 3 black. I also picked up the LCD back pac which makes it easier to position it so you can see the angle that you want. It's also cool because if you're riding with friends you can immediately see the footage when you stop for a break. There is an optional battery back pac too but you can't use both that and the LCD pac at the same time. I went on Amazon and got 2 extra batteries and a wall charger for a reasonable price. I carry the extra batteries with me when I ride. You can turn off the LCD independent of the main unit if you want to conserve battery life..... it's not like you can watch it as you ride anyway. I have mine mounted on the handle bars... would like to try it on my helmet one of these days. Rammount.com makes a much better handlebar mount than the stock go pro mount... easier to use and more sturdy plus you get 360 degree adjustability. Yeah, the black edition is not cheap and IO wish it were tube shaped like the Contour, but I think it's the best one out there. If you have a Best Buy card, you can probably do 6 months interest free financing :D
