yes i know it says HD on it but i got it at half price for $205 from the dealer (i think the guy ****ed up because the tag said $475)
but its pretty much the HJC FS-15 Carbon
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i118/Nirvana12211990/c32a1c09.jpg just with HD decals and even the HJC retails for $330-$350 so its worth it.

I wish I could fit in some of these cooler helmets. I have a HJC CL-16 in flat black. It was the only helmet my local shop sold in a XXXL. I knew I had a big melon but I did not think it was that bad. Anyone else with a big head find helmets that fit well?

Thinking about buying this helmet as a fun gadget.
Planning to use it for;
- Organized trips
- Driving in Germany (law exeption for these helmets)
- Decoration on my dash
- Halloween, when these kids want to wake me up early for sweets.....

When the chin of the helmet hit the concrete my head slammed into it, thus smashing my nose. You can see where I slid on the shield as well. I didn't know I was bleeding until I went to pick up my bike. Needless to say, my nose was sore for about a month.

pinball, that makes two of us. I've always been an advocate for wearing gear, and even though this was only around 15 mph it could have turned out way worse than it did. The helmet did it's job. And yes, it's the Alliance. Mine was the Operator Alliance SSR. Always got comments and compliments on it.

i know it says HD but its an HJC FS-15 Carbon and from what ive read its one of the lightest helmets out there. Of course the HD one was about 150 more than the HJC i can't complain, its saved my head before and the first one I got as a gift and split the bill on the second one with my dad (hopfully i wont NEED to replace it again)
heres my old one (now on display in the garage as a reminder)

If only these were DOT

Hey Jakes, they ought to be DOT...I'm sure they have a higher safety rating then the DOT would require.

I still have my HGU-56/P in my closet...figure if its good enough to wear flying a helicopter, it should be more then sufficient for wearing on a Buell...

I'm just about to go for the course, and they require you to bring your own gear. I'm a complete newbie to all this, bUt I want my license and bike by the end of the summer (hopefully). So to start, what is a good helmet ( full face coverage). I knw there's brands like shoei, htc. What should I be looking for when I do purchase. Shoei is extremely expensive, should I go for that? Or is it only expensive becuase of the brand?

Also, should I invest in any other gear (what brand or type is good?) or could I just wear long protective clothing from my own wardrobe like jeans leather boots etc.
http://www.leatherup.com/

McMurphy
09-05-2011, 09:30 PM
For helmets look around and try on as many as you can. Figure out what size you wear in the major brands you intend to look at, Icon, HJC, Shoei, whatever else you want to look at. Does the helmet fit snug but not to tight? Does it stay in place if you turn your head fast back and forth, up and down (with the chin strap done of course)? ASK THE SALES GUY! Don't let them push you to one helmet or another, but ask them to help you get sized for a helmet. Generally they might know atleast something.
Generally you'll wear the same size throughout that manufacturers line.

Next find what's in your price range. Protection wise you're not going to find a MAJOR difference between brands unless you're paying major $$$$$ for that atmosphere re-entry tested racing helmet. Not to mention when you're on a budget and the helmet takes up $800 of that $1000 you set aside, that's less money for other gear.

Next look through the helmets in your price range, and find the most comfortable. Is the padding comfortable? Does it have any spots that are uncomfortable? Any hot spots where it seems to rub? Would you want to wear it for 2hrs? Does it seem to ventilate well? Is the field of view decent? If you close the visor does it cut out a lot of background noise or does it still sound like it'll be loud when you're doing 70mph down the freeway?

Then when all is figured out, find a paint scheme you like, or do your own! Decals, paint jobs, something to personalize it if you want to.

After that, invest in some good gloves for where you ride. Always go for leather, or kevlar palms. The heavier the better. If it's hot weather go with a textile, mesh, or ventilated leather upper. If it's colder riding, a leather glove with little or no ventilation is fine. Get something comfortable that fits! Too large and it can get hooked up on stuff. Too small and they're rip and wear out faster.

A good jacket WITH ARMOR/PADDING is the best way to go. Sure it'll be bulkier, but when you land on your shoulder or back doing even 10mph it'll feel like someone just nailed you with a baseball bat. **** sucks, have a messed up shoulder from one of those lil 10mph jobs.

Yet again, leather is going to be the most abrasion resistant...but it's still going to be hot as hell. Textile/mesh is more comfortable and will get the job done. Mesh is great for hot days, but does even less against asphalt. I like Mesh or Textile/Mesh, it breathes well and won't leave you feeling like you're in a sweat box. You can also look into a Leather/Mesh hybrid jackets are also starting to come down in price and are a decent alternative.

As for pants, as wrong as it is most of us just wear a heavy pair of blue jeans at best. It's the wrong answer, but it's more comfortable. Yet again Leather is the best, textile/mesh work, as does the kevlar reinforced denim (Draggin' Jeans for example). Make sure they fit well in a tuck, and that they're not to long as to catch on anything (pegs/shifter/belt for example). If they connect to your jacket in the back, even better.

As for boots, go for comfort and protection. Over the ankle at the least (if you go down in shoes, you can grind the outside of your ankle clear off). I usually just wear my Oakley SI Boots. They're comfy, I have to wear tan boots for work anyways, and they're leather with good ventilation. They may not be the BEST protection (though my issue boots stood up well at 45mph) but they're comfortable and that's what matters in boots to me.

What you buy/don't buy is all up to you, but just keep in mind that skin+pavement=wire brush in open wounds. After it happens once you'll do your part to never let it again.

As for brands, look around in threads here. Alpinestar, Dainese(sp?), Icon, Shoei, and all the other brands people mention a lot tend to be mentioned that much for a reason.

I had bandit xxr for four years.. Bandit is in my opinion the best looking helmet in the market, but it is also very heavy, noisy and what bothered me the most was there is no sealing between helmet core and visor, so it dripped water to nose when i rode in the rain :D

I had gloss black with black visor, and like I said, it was cool as hell :) next summer my head is covered with marushin rs2 carbon..

@Thaloc;

It's a great comfortable helm for the summer, it looks agressive and turns heads. But if you ride all year including rain (little rain is ok) then i suggest not getting it, it isn't rain proof...too many openings at the top of the lid and the rain will pour down your face [mad].

Roweniii, what kind of helmet is that, carbon flip-up sport helmet? I'd be intrested to know make and model.

I got a new helmet a couple weeks ago, today was my first ride on it. I love the commodity that flip-up helmets provide, (with integrated retractable sun visor) but I also like light weight and good aerodynamics. So, I got this, an HJC R-Pha Max, flip-up, lightweight, high-end, retractable sun visor, good aerodynamics.

http://www.thevisorshop.com/acatalog/pres_Casque-modulable-Hjc-R-PHA-MAX-MAT-1.jpg

http://188.165.192.213/clients/prod-3d/AMR/HJC/R-Pha-Max-noir-mat/gif/produit.gif

(I think it's called RP-Max on the US)
My previous helmet was a Airoh Miro and also own a Momo Devil.
What can I say, wow, the HJC is superb in every way! Has a couple imperfections, but nothing important. Have never considered an HJC before, but for the reasons stated above I got this one.
The only thing I don't like is the design. I love everything else compared to my previous helmet. Lighweight, much better aerodynamics (Airoh made my forehead hurt on constant speeds above 170 km/h), much better ventilation, much less noise, nice locking system for the flip-up piece, nice sun visor, really comfortable. I rode under the burning hot mid-day sun on 33 degrees Celsious weather, and the helmet felt quite fresh, as it has a special lining to keep the rider cool.
A bit expensive, but money well spent overall!

On another safety note, I went for a fast ride along the twisty roads towards Ancient Epidavros (famous bikers road over here). Good thing I was wearing my Sidi Vertigo Air racing boots, and not the IXS riding boots, as the Sidi have a slider on the tip. I went on a corner really determined, big lean angle, tip of my boot was hanging off the peg and got scraped on the ground. It it wasn't for sliders, it might have caught up on the tarmac.

Frozone they arent BAD helmets. The cheek pads are their biggest problems, they just break down way to fast. Other then that they are good first time helmets.

You have to remember with helmets you get what you pay for.

If you have some issues with HJC, what are they? I'm currently thinking about a new helmet...

1. They are generally heavier than the competition and pretty loud.
2. I went down in a CL-SP and broke my jaw on a side impact.

Ive had a hjc probobly save me some serious damage in a 75 mph fourwheeler wreck! It took a hell of a hit , knocked off a lotta paint ! I walked away with no head injuries ! So i cant knock them but since that i have invested in other helmets and the hjc's quality is just not on par with other, more expencive helmets. You get what you pay for! I think bell has really stepped up there game and are putting out the best bang for the buck! Just my $0.02

I've been riding motorcyles of all types for 30 years and I love HJCs. I just picked up an IS-16. For around 200 bucks, you can't really beat it. I use my helmets daily and they can get pretty beat up. No reason for me to spend 500+ bucks on one. It is one of the lightest helmets I've ever had. Much lighter than my Shark and fits better than my Shoei. The integrated sun visor is fantastic, air flow is good, and it is relatively quiet. The only thing that feels cheezy to me are the d-rings for the strap. The interior is nice with a new moisture wicking fabric. And yes, the cheek pads are replaceable just in case they ever do wear out. What's nice about HJC is that they offer a full range of helmets from very inexpensive beginner helmets all the way to very expensive high-end helmets used by racers.

It also lifts over 100, but I ride with it 95% of the time instead of my Shoei as it is much more comfortable, more field of vision, more airflow and looks amazing. My cool new helmet I picked up today.... guy on Craigslist had a brand spanking new icon airframe in claymore graphics. $300 brand new I got it for $150. Still had the shield sticker on. It fits a little tight which surprised me but I like it!!!! Goes with my icon jacket and pants and new gloves I picked up today as well.

Hey greasy, I know you got a new helmet but I thought I'd at least still mention that I like my Bell Vortex. The Vortex is a little bigger on the outside than my old Icon Aliance SSR (had the Operator with Rubatone finish) but it feels really good.
Inside the helmet it is comfortable and feels like it is more secure. It also has a good airflow and is breatheable. Outside doesn't get buffeted that much, in my opinion.
Hope that helps for future reference, or for anyone else that might be thinking about one.

I don't know if it's possible to have a better match... and I owned the helmet first.
HJC red Carbon FS15. They sell the carbon helmets in a couple colors (incase you had an amber wheel bike ;) )

I also have a Sparx S07 and a Sparx Nexus... but neither match the bike as well (white and red).

I applied, Im not too sure about all the distractions this helmet might be offering, after all, Riding requires 110% concentration, However I AM very interested in the rear view and safety elements as well as the navigation, not so much the telephone aspects, people shouldnt be on the phone when riding or driving,
I was hit HARD from behind while on my bike by a drunk driver (her 75mph) (me 45mph) and im pretty paranoid about driving at all, and freak out still, But im fine riding except even more hyper vigilant than before and more aggressive, You cant take me out from behind if im hauling ass, . So the rear view camera and safety aspects are interesting. Worth a shot.
BTW, I have become SUPER sensitive to idiots texting while driving, I have,, err ahem,, thrown plastic soda bottles at a few people as well while driving and texting. So dont text, and I wont throw **** at you. It has gotten so bad the govt is spending local tax dollars here to equip public transportation with beepers because so many idiot pedestrians are walking out in front of busses, trains and vehicles. Freakin idiots!

I like it ... The faceshield doesn't really touch your face other than around your eyes unless you're doing about 80+ and even then it just rests against your chin really ... the foam around the eye lens is what the elastic straps pull against your face when you have the faceshield down ... it's not bad at all ...

I've had a few Arai helmets before ... and I absolutely believe it when you say it's by far the most comfortable helmet you've ever worn .... It's like wearing a damn pillow ... I've never had a better quality helmet ... that being said, you definitely pay for it for sure ... They're proud of their products and the price tags show it ! lol ... Still, well worth the money ... and that XD4 looks badass ... I used to have an AFX FX39DS which looked similar but nowhere near the quality ...

Decided to travel the unbeaten path and get an LS2 FF386. DOT and ECE rated, not quite Snell, but still pretty solid. The modular mechanism works great, the ventilation is much better than I expected, and I love the internal sun visor.

I'd been using a Bell Vortex (Flying Tiger color scheme) with a SolFX shield and absolutely loved it. Then I found out I'm moving for a work and had to get an ECE approved helmet which Bell doesn't make. I settled on the same ICON Airframe Construct Manic as ChuckieE showed in post #31 and couldn't be happier. I will miss having the photochromic shield, but this helmet fits better, is quieter, flows better, and I feel a lot less wind buffetting of my head at highway speeds.

Seems comparable to my Shoei X12 air flow wise, really not to big of a difference in this area. However very much lighter........never really thought much about weight, wind buffeting, and field of viewing aperture but these aspect are considerably more favorable and noticeable. Have only had it for about a month and so far so good!
