View Full Version : Cutting out around 6k RPMs

Alright, here's a brain teaser. My friend has a 2008 1125r that he just bought used with 2k miles on it. The bike sat for a while with the previous owner, and ever since my friend bought it from him it has had issues stalling out, especially at lights, in neutral, etc. We figured it might just be bad gas so we ran the tank dry as well as adding STP fuel injector cleaner with the next fill (93 octane).

The real problem surfaced tonight when he and I went for a ride to continue cycling gas through. About 15 minutes into the ride it stalled again while idling in traffic (very annoying) and when he started it up it was almost as if a governor was keeping the bike from going past 5-6k rpms. So it wasn't the speed that restricted the bike as much as the RPMs. We pulled over, I did the only thing I could think of (TPS reset) and we rode home on what almost felt like 1 cylinder.

Has anyone ever heard of this kind of thing or have ANY idea what could cause the bike to just out of the blue start acting like a 250cc bike?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Update: No check engine light during this fiasco, went to diag mode and pulled the following codes:
COMM ERROR.....FUEL PR SYS ERR......IAC SYS ERROR......FRT 02 SYS ERR.

I would start with testing the fuel pressure and then checking the resistance of the sensors with a multi meter .

Good luck hope you get it all sorted out

start with battery. a low battery will drastically affect fuel pump/pressure. and a host of other issues. If it sat for a while it could have really done some damage to the battery.

How old are the plugs? I'd throw a new set in just for good measure.

Wish it was easy to just throw in new plugs. Nothing like having to rotate the engine to do that job.
