A consequence of video-capturing everything today is that a few seconds of harmless indiscretion can easily be decontextualized and end a career.

Should the cop in the video have indulged the challenge to a race? By the letter of the law, no. But if one of the functions of motorcycle police is public relations, perhaps a friendly bit of fun is acceptable(?). [confused]

I think the CBR rider showed poorer judgement by posting the video than the cop did.

Yeah they were harmless. They raced to what, the speed limit? That officer was just a cool guy, and was still safe.

What a cool cop. If there were more cops that acted like normal people on the job maybe there wouldn't be such a dislike to them. But this just goes to show us why they can't be like us... If I lost my job or was disciplined every time I "had a little fun" I would be on welfare like all the people I support through forced charities.

They raced to what, the speed limit?Yeah ,I think I made out a sign that showed they were in a 45mph zone, and I think saw the CBR's speedo at 60mph briefly. Certainly nothing reckless occurred, and motorcycle cops are trained for riding under much more extreme conditions than what's depicted in the vid.

I guess my only beefs would be that we expect cops to adhere to the same laws they uphold, and I don't like seeing my tax dollars go towards civil servants drag racing around on the public purse...

[up] to the cop. You're OK in my book.

Honestly I consider Motorcycle Cops brethren. Although I have some dislike for the rider, no gear per se and just taunting a cop in my book is no no. 'nough said.

I know a handful of Moto jocks real good.

( I hate hearing a Harley at work, as it usually means I'm going to spend the next couple hours fixing the radio or camera system )

Most of those guys are hard asses on the outside, but once you get to know them, they are everyday folks just like us.

They just have to be careful, eyes are always watching...

Am I the only one annoyed with the quick revs by a efi bike? Its a call for attention I say. The cop seems like a nice guy and finding that trait in law enforcement seems hard to come by. In both cases neither were doing wot hole shots or excessive speed. Looks like playful fun to me.

I've read a few threads on other forums about this, and depending on what the forum is, some are totally against the cop doing this and some aren't. It surprised me a little bit on the one, since they tend to be on the edge of questionable legality.

I don't think the cop needed to be fired, or needed to resign, I think he needed to be reminded with a verbal reprimand and a ticket for drag racing and/or exhibition of speed.

But, he was just being human, and humans **** up now and then, so… yeah, let him be a cool dude like that. But no more racing on a cop bike.

I'm sorry but if that cop was racing then I should be in jail.

IMO that wasn't racing. They accelerated fast(both) but that's about it

I don't think the cop needed to be fired, or needed to resign, I think he needed to be reminded with a verbal reprimand and a ticket for drag racing and/or exhibition of speed.

FYI in most states that would be a considered a Class A/B Misd, which would remove your ability to even be a police officer.

For Example I got a deferred Reckless for being "human." In Colorado it's a Class Two Misd. In Texas it's transferred as a Class B. TCLOSE(?) or whatever the agency is called that does the admin work for Police Officer Licenses bars you from getting one until 10 years after the conviction date. In Texas a deferred is considered a conviction.

So long story short, if they were to ticket him for anything at that level, which he deserves regardless of what speed he was going, he would lose his career.

Before I get flamed for saying he deserves it...Yes I ride like a bat out of hell at times too, but I don't let anyone GoPro it and I'm not in a high profile position that requires me to be an adult when I'm off the clock.

Life decisions.
