I'm looking to clean up the rear of my 03 XB9S. I bought the bike last year with the license plate bracket already removed and I immediately took off the passenger foot pegs. I'd like to get rid of the belt cover on top and bottom. Is this okay to do? If so how do I go about doing it? I've got the rear tire already off for new rubber so now is my chance. Any help is appreciated.

pretty easy to remove the guards...you'll need to remove the swing arm brace and idler pulley cover to it all out. if you have the manual, pgs. 2-79 and 2-80 guide you through both removal and installation process. go to buellmods.com to down load the manual if you don't have one.

i put on an '04 lower guard after removing the entire '03 set up

I did it. however I re-install them for my yearly cross country trip. just to be safe. Ive heard stories of rock's getting under the belt and causing it to snap, however Its not common. but it is possible. I would just avoid gravel roads as much as possible if you do.

Pavement only for me. Glad to hear its OK to do. I'll probably have to download the manual though. This is my first time really tearing into this beast.

Reflectors are gone as well as one tire. I'll see what I can do about getting rid of the other tire and brakes.

If you really want a clean look, get rid of those pesky handlebars. That way you can park it at Starbucks and anyone who sees the bike will know you're serious.

1. remove valve stems
2. add Li-Ion battery ( extreme handling improvements + better 1/4 mi times )

all jokes aside I would not remove belt cover, around 12k miles I got stone puncture with cover in place and riding only on the paved roads. Also more important, what if part of your body or clothing gets close to that belt - something to think about

with all due respect ross....when i roll up to starbucks on my Vino 125 with Leo Vince exhaust and large side-panel sticker proclaiming....."CAUTION-rider may bail at any time".....they already know i'm serious.

they already know i'm serious.
Those spandex pants you wear riding that thing tells them you're serious!! :D

3rd year with no belt covers
09Bolt....you won't get any stones in there, sitting in your driveway!!
RELAX! I'm just playing!! :D

Stoke, I just removed the lower cover on my '06 lightning. I'm well aware of the dangers of catching a rock or debris, but I think it looks cleaner and the top guard still keeps shoelaces and feet from the belt.
