Had the rear tire replaced Saturday. Made it almost home tonight and I starting hearing a thud from the rear that sounded like something was in the wheel. Should there be any play in the rear wheel? I can move it back and forth a fraction of an inch with it sitting on kickstand.

How are the bearings?

The noise continues whether it's rolling in gear or in neutral. At first I thought possibly clutch related? However it really sounds like it's coming from the rear.

Would the bearing fail that drastically? I was curious if he didn't tighten everything up.

Also have what looks like rust colored stains on the wheel and rotor, this just happened since the tire was replaced. I thought maybe it was excess axle grease, however it looks like rust. And looks like it's coming out around the axle.

Bearings are known to be a common Achilles heel on our Buells.

Sure enough the bearing gave out. Any replacements better than the rest?

Would the bearing fail that drastically? As you found out, bearing failures are fast & catastrophic. The excessive free-play & rust coloration are typical tell-tales of imminent failure. In future, you can also monitor bearings for early signs of failure by placing your fingers on the hubs after long rides to check for heat generation.
