I picked recently picked up a 2002 X1 that I bought from my friend who laid it down, I got it cheap enough that I feel like I could spend some money get some custom fabrication done, hopefully make this a sweet ride someday. First things first is I want to get it running properly, he had a really nice carbon fiber air cleaner kit, that was crushed when he went down. I'm looking around at some air cleaner options, the gasket part number is the same to the CV carb, so I'm assuming I can put on any cleaner that will fit a CV, anyone know for sure?

In the back plate of the existing (crushed) air cleaner looks like an air sensor, I'm assuming that is going to have to go back in to whatever air cleaner I end up with, correct?

Looks like the bike has all the stock emissions canister stuff, I have other bikes that folks rip that out and trick the ECU, is that the case for these Buells too or are y'all just leaving that stuff on.

Lastly as much as I like EFI I'm also worried about getting into a situation where it's not supported by software or something, is it crazy to just put an S&S on it and tune the old school way?

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your build and your new addiction. Some pics would be nice or as we say around here... Pics or it didn't happen. I'm an XB guy so I can't help you, just dropping in to give you a good welcome.

Yes, pics are always good ;)

That's it before I put on the new front tire and stripped a bunch of broken stuff off it

Welcome to the club. You don't just have an X1, you have an X1W "White Lightning". Good job!
The sensor in the intake is an Intake Air Temp sensor, and is necessary if you want to keep the injection.
Some people do switch to a carb, but I prefer injection on the Buell. The S&S carb is right for my Shovel, but the injection makes my S3 run great.

Keep the injection, software is free and the hardware is cheap for tuning and mods.
The air cleaner, only issue with air cleaners that fit interfere with your knees.
The evap/emission crap, juat remove it the ecm doesnt even care that its there or know.
What ever you do, dont hack that bike its a rare piece, do tasteful mods and repair properly

Thanks for the info, that's good to know it won't throw an error code if I remove the evap/emission stuff.

That's a good call on the air intake hitting the knees, I was wondering why everyone puts on those force winders, seems like the 'go to' air cleaner.

I definitely want to do a classy build on it and no plans to chop it. I did have an idea in my head to have a custom tube subframe and front fender bracket made to try and do a classic looking racer. I was pretty inspired by this:

I just don't think I could afford to get a custom tank made.

A full restore would probably be cheaper and easier, but less exciting to me. How rare is this bike?

That being said, the shifter is bent and I was thinking about getting a whole new set of rear sets but having trouble finding who is making stuff still. Any good resources for who might have Buell parts still?

Welcome-

The force winder will give you the most knee clearance. a while back I ran a Prospect hill sporty air cleaner on my bike and it hit my knee terrible... so i re drilled the mounting holes and clocked it to a 45 degree which gave me more knee clearance.... didnt like the look though so i made a custom force winder style, which worked great. Then i made a custom ham can but made it as far forward as i possible could. Still a little knee rubbing once in a while. My new rearsets move my feet back fair enough though to eliminate any knee rubbing now!

Purpony, youre a crafty guy with resources. Tube frame rear sets and linkages are next to impossible to find these days. Any thoughts on making some sets for sale?
