Hello to everyone! I have followed this great forum for few years, as many as I have been owner of my dear X1. Story begins in late 2012 when I bought mint X1 Lightning. It had only 15000 miles on it but looks had change in the wrong direction. I had pretty clear image in my head what I should do to make it more for my taste. So this is how it looked like...

Chrome makes me sick. Matte black is more my taste. Stay tuned...

Your bike looks very nice Jauhoparta! The gold forks really set the bike off with all the black. Love it!

What should I show first, maeby tail. This final tail is actually third I made. First 2 didnt really fit my eye. First was Honda cbr RR tail which became ugly as f#&k and second was tubular but used the original seat base. Second was pretty good but was little too massive. For the final piece I first turned 4 connecting pieces, like so
http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy67/tuuneri/Buell%20X1/20160428_090459.jpg (http://s778.photobucket.com/user/tuuneri/media/Buell%20X1/20160428_090459.jpg.html)
Rest of the tail was made from seamless 25x3mm hydraulic pipe, 3mm sheet metal and random bits. I bended everything with "el cheapo" tube bender (crusher) borrowed from my friend. It was huge pain to get every bend similar both sides. Then I welded little pipe to become tail light housing...

I like seeing the whole process. I think it's awesome, seeing what a home "garage builder" can pull off with minimal tools.

I took 3mm thick aluminium and beat it to undertray. Maeby some tigging was also needed :)

Finlands license plate for motorcycles is a huge rape from behind to my buells nice bottom so I put it on the side mounting style. It isn't beautiful but at least other side of the bike isn't raped  mounted on the axle and supported by brake caliber. It just passes the laws here.

How about seat? I hated when the original plastic seat base surrendered under my ass so I made new seat base from 3mm thick aluminium. It works like original and there is even storage only slightly smaller than my wallet

Well, seat base was just welded up like a puzzle. I bought everlast AC/DC tig at the time and seat base was my first practise job. Then it was just a case of filing and sanding it smooth...
http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy67/tuuneri/Buell%20X1/image-1-1.jpg (http://s778.photobucket.com/user/tuuneri/media/Buell%20X1/image-1-1.jpg.html)

Foam was 30mm thick and clued to the base with 3M contact cement. I clued 3 layers on top of each other and cut it roughly with long knife. Then I clued final layer and carefully smoothened it with angle grinder and fiber disc. I had to make it really smooth because didn't want any smoothing layers before cover. This made it fit nicely. Seat became much more comfortable than the original even its very firm. Shape is far more important than softness

That's your first TIG weld?!? Lord, I need to step up my game.

I highly doubt that the seat pan is his first rodeo with a TIG torch. Maybe the first with that particular machine. Welding aluminum is no joke and those welds, along with the other metal work that's been posted, lead me to believe this guy is a custom auto-body guy or a former aircraft mechanic.
Definitely a skilled metal fabricator.
But I'm sure you were just being facetious

04-28-2016, 05:53 PM
Actually that seat was my first time welding aluminum. I learned to weld steel with tig when I made the tubular tail. I tried tig welding once on a piece of aluminum sheet when I was in army 2008 but I had no clue how to do anything with tig torch then. Mig welding is old friend from the past but I dont really like it. Too many rotten cars here in Finland 😃

Thanks for the compliments. Let us all praise Harley for inventing vrod headlight because it is the only one fitting perfectly for buell IMO. Vrod mount was not what i wanted and didn't want any brackets in my gold forks so I made bottom mount conversion

You keep impressing me more and more every time you post pics of your build. Extremely nice work, your tig and fab skills are brutally impressive. Your engineering game is bar none as well. Way to go man, can't wait to see what you get into next.

Thanks, you know that contractive criticism is allowed also I'm pretty pleased for results because this my first motorcycle. This buid has been nice trip and it has taught me so much. Machining and tigwelding are just couple of the things I've learned during the process. So how about some flying hot metal chips I milled the upper tripple flat and used Renthal fatbar clamps
