View Full Version : stupid Oil Mistake
So wasn't paying attention and threw .1 quarts of mobil 1 10w-30 with about 2.7 quarts of Mobil vtwin 20w-50.... It's ok right? They're both very fresh. The bottles look identical!

It's really not good to mix viscosities, only in a emergency would i do it. Sorry probably not the answer you are looking for. If it was me I would drain it and chalk it up to a loss and start over but leave filter on. The little bit in filter will not make a difference.

Meh. .1 of a quart? Call me a brute but I wouldn't sweat it. That's way less than what's in the filter.

Sorry I didn't see the point in front of the 1 . Cooters is on it again.

.1? Like mentioned above...no big deal. But since you are concerned enough to start a thread over it, just change the oil for your own piece of mind.
I agree. It would probably drive me crazy. I would do it in a pinch on a trip, but would dump it asap. Likely won't hurt a thing though.

There's nothing wrong with mixing oil viscosity.
http://www.belray.com/what-exactly-do-multi-visc-designations-mean
The name itself designates that your oil is multi-viscosity. What do you think "10W-30" stands for? "W" is not "Weight", it's the "Winter" viscosity and the -# is the summer viscosity. By mixing, you're just adding more viscosity grades in to the range of operability...nothing wrong with it. Do you really want to argue with Mobil, Chevnron, Shell and Bel-Ray? I mean, this is kinda their world.

Can I mix different viscosity grades of motor oils?
Yes. It is always advisable to not mix motor oil brands, however, different viscosity grades of the same brand motor oil are compatible. Be aware that mixing viscosity grades will turn out a product that is different in viscosity than either what was originally in the engine or what was added.
If you mix viscosity grades such as a 5W30 low-viscosity oil and a 10W40 higher-viscosity oil, it is reasonable to expect that the resulting product will have viscosity characteristics which are thicker than the 5W30, but thinner than the 10W40. This change does not reflect incompatibility - it's simply a re-balancing of the viscosity characteristics. In all other ways, the product should work as expected. But there's absolutely no danger about incompatibility resulting from mixing engine oils," Miller says. "We've tested all of our grades and brands, and we haven't observed any problems.
For our customers to choose a viscosity grade, we recommend they follow the engine manufacturer's recommendations as indicated in their owner's manual. There is no need to mix two Mobil 1 viscosity grades when one will do; however, we see no problem mixing different SAE grades of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic series motor oils.

I personally don't see it being an issue,
but
It will also not be that expensive for you to drain and refill it for peace of mind.
I suggest you do that so you won't sweat it and can enjoy your Buell to it's fullest.

That's less than 4% of the total amount of oil in it. I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep over it.
