04 XB12r, looking to increase oil capacity. Has anybody here added a small canister or an extra reservoir on the engine oil return line?

Why do you think you want more capacity? If you're looking for better cooling, that won't do an effective job.
Not to worry, air-cooled engines are suited to high temperature swings. It's not your thermostat water-cooled car.
But if you're still worried, '08- Thunderstorm bikes came with a larger cooler OEM. They were rated the same Hp, but it's an easy retro-fit with a minor bracket change or mod.
