Are you trickle charging the battery for the winter? If so you can leave it connected as long as the charger has that feature.
If you´re charging a discharged battery, when its fully charged the charger would comute to maintenance mode and some kind of warning should be visible(light).
Or maybe read the instructions!!:D
Don´t need to take it off and the charger should be on a stable base, above or below the battery it´s the same, i´ve alway used my charger on the floor.

i was told to keep the charger above the battery?By the way, who said that the charger had to be elevated above the battery? - Cause that's ridiculous, it's electricity not Water. Somebody's screwing with you. :o

on my tender as i read the directions ..It said do not leave on for long periods of time..it could be because i have the 6 amp for gel battery. its a deltran and does have a storage mode.. its a wall mount ...i hardly ever use it..it can effect the water in the battery if its not a close battery or a gel ....that might not apply here..not a good idea to leave it on

I leave my Battery Tender Jr. connected all the time. It is a trickle charger. It goes into maintenance mode once the battery is fully charged. I usually switch between my two bikes on a monthly basis.
