My 09 XT bought in november often would spit back through the intake when leaving from a stop. The 1000 mile service was done just before it turned cold so today was the first time out this year. I had learned to keep the rpms up a little so when it coughed it would not die but today things were different. The cough was gone after 20 miles but i need to change my off the line style because it really likes to stay on one wheel.

My Ulysses did the spit thing really bad, I got the comfort kit installed & a reflash of ecm was done. It is much better , but on occasion,it still will spit back. It dosent die ,but makes you think it will. If you can stop the pop/spit please post what you found. It is a minor annoyance but does rattle ones nerves because it generaly happens as you blip thr throtal to take off.

TwoBuells, I had the same issue when I bought mine. Not only was it annoying, but very dangerous. Especially when taking off around a corner. I was actually so frustrated I was considering trading it in on a Japanese bike. Now that it is fixed I LOVE my Uly! What I found is that the dealer was starting it in the showroom, revving it, and shutting it off, so they thought the plugs were fouled. I went through 6 sets of plugs in a year, not to tell of the rest of the times it was in the dealership because it ran like crap. At one point it got so bad that on the way to the dealership the bike topped out at 43 MPH! When they replaced the plugs the last time they found the plug hole in the rear head was stripped/cross-threaded. They ended up replacing the rear head. I have tried to put this in terms of not pointing fingers, it could have been the plug was not installed properly or tight from the factory, or they stripped it. Also, I live in the mountains, 4500 ft, so the bike was also compensating fuel and run lean to begin with. I installed the race ecm, but the damage had already been done to the head and I was no longer getting the right compression at the rear cylinder. The dealer was absolutely useless at finding the problem. I actually called the HD factory customer service, explained my problem and that I was going to start filing formal complaints (I found a friend that worked at a HD dealership as a sales person who told me to do this). The first thing they did was assure me that they would replace the bike if they could not fix it, but they (HD) not the dealer would like to look at it to see what was wrong first. She also assured me that the specialist has not found one that he was not able to fix to the satisfaction of the customer. The process she explained to me was
1. The specialist would walk the dealer (who does not specialize in Buells) through several processes over the phone, if that did not correct the issue then
2. He would personally fly down to do the repairs himself, if that did not correct the issue then
3. They would gladly replace my bike.
Again, the dealer needs to check all of the basic stuff, timing, whatever, then make sure they check out the plugs and plug holes. There were several things that I did to 'help' it, but it didn't fix the real issue. It took a year for me to decide to call HD but once I did, wow what a difference in service. They (the dealer) no longer blamed me for the problems (your not letting the bike warm up, you arent riding it long enough when you start it, it has to be the air filter or the pipe even though it had this problem before you put them on) and actually fixed the bike. Once you are sure that the bike is mechanically sound, then there are other things you can do to help increase performance (Breather mod, ECM remap, pipe and air filter). I would shy away from these due to warranty restrictions until THEY fix your bike! The dealer where I bought mine kept blaming my K&N air filter. Really? Do I look like a moron? I am not a motorcycle mechanic, true, but I do have some mechanical aptitude; and I FREAKING RADARS FOR A LIVING!
Anyway, I hope this helps, call big Harley, they stand behind their bikes even when the dealer won't. Make the dealer provide the service you already paid for.

Hello Twistedrose welcome to the forms. thanks for all the info but my bike seems to get better every time i ride it. My bike was in the shipping crate untill the time i purchased it so nobody has had a chance to cause me any grief yet. Sorry about all your troubles but it sounds like they resolved your problems. I"m hessitant to change much untill its about out of warranty because of my past experience with hd service.

Buells run lean out of the box, I hope yours continues to get better. On mine I just finished with a new pipe, breather mod and new map. I couldn't be happier with it now!
