Reat wheel removal glitch

OK my first bit of refurbishing this bike has come to a quicck halt, The previous owner used this mostly off road and put it away wet. My first project was to change from these knobbies. The rear axel has no pinch bolt. After trying to loosen the axel I can see it doesn't need one, It is tight ,tight .tight. So before I try and force something the wrong way my queation is, are the axel threads right or left hand threads?

Right hand. It is the front axle that is left hand threads and labelled as such.

You're sure the pinch bolt is missing? Torque spec is only 50ft/lbs for the rear axle and it is VERY important you follow the torque procedure thats in the manual here when re-installing:

:( But now I think you'll be putting a heli-coil in the pinch bolt location, and after you use a 4' breaker bar to remove the rear axle, you will need a new one, new bearings and a new bearing spacer. If they get crushed like that it doesn't bode well for new bearing longevity.

I've wondered about the pinch bolt on the rear axle. Mind you, my bike doesn't have one - a PO stripped it out.

But, is it necessary? Any bearing failure or other torque on the axle would only act to tighten the bolt - so it's not needed for safety.

FWIW, I put a witness mark on the bolt after installing the wheel to show any movement. There hasn't been any.
 
The axle wouldn't have to loosen very much to lose torque. IMO, I'd repair it. You can even put the heli-coil in without removing the axle.:applause:

I imagine that pinch bolt also holds the head of the axle in the swingarm a bit tighter. Perhaps limiting flex and even vibration wear or galling in that area? I dunno, I'll leave that higher mind stuff to the pros, but I'd fix it:)
 
I have a Ulysses swingarm, I was going to use on my scg to stretch it a bit. Ever since that bozo CoOter got me into track riding, thats been my focus lately, and I don't forsee doing that swap anymore, and I could be convinced to sell it.
