I've been running a stock exhaust for a while. I picked up a Buell race pipe here locally a couple of weeks ago. I figured it would probably need a re-map once I put it on, but I've been riding the bike anyway. The performance definitely suffered so I began looking into options for tuning. Mine is an 09 XB9SX and I quickly found out that finding maps for 09 and above XBs is as easy as finding an honest politician. After searching everywhere, INCLUDING Hunter and Hilary's laptops, I was able to come up with a race map for my bike and loaded it on through a Buelltooth interface using ECMDroid. I then did a TPS reset and she has definitely come to life.

So here comes a question. I've not done any mods to the airbox. IIRC the racekit mod was three parts. The pipe, the retune map, and an airbox mod. The mods I've seen require a cutting up of the airbox. Not a big fan of that over here. Is it necessary? I'm guessing with increased airflow the bike will run even better than it does currently. I'm just leery of cutting on the bike.

Levan: Does that CityX have Kick-Ash transluscent bodywork? Can't tell from the pic and every SX model I've ever seen has transluscent bodywork. If it does, the view thru the airbox cover to the inner airbox might look unsavory if hacked up. And what's the gain? I would tend to think it's negligible, at best. Just my opinion.

John: It came with Cherry Bomb plastics. So yes it had(has) the translucent windscreen and airbox cover. I've picked up various screens and covers over the years because I like changing the look of the bike every so often.

I've read in various places about the airbox mod. I'm just not aware how much difference it would make. I doubt I'd ever hack up the airbox so I'm probably asking this more out of curiosity than anything else.

Great looking bike John. I see it has the hand guards and a different exhaust. Is that a Special Ops pipe?

Thanks much Levan! I bought it 11 years ago from a doctor in Philadelphia with 2800 miles on it. It would sporadically lose oil pressure, activate the low oil pressure cluster light, and rattle the lifters. Local dealership couldn't identify the problem and wouldn't warranty it. Bought it cheap and convinced the factory to warranty it. Replaced ailing lump with entire new crate assembly properly numbered and stamped to identically match the original. 9000 miles on it now and never another problem. The muffler is a Hawkins. Rest of the bike all stock original.

Some of the airboxes on the later models were "cut up" from the factory.

Thanks Aaron. I didn't know that. I'll keep watch for a part out. That ebay price is too rich for me... especially with $57 shipping.

No worries. I just put that link there to show what the factory added to "ventilate" the airbox.

And now, I need to look at mine later tonight. I have this bad feeling I may have an early model airbox lid on the MethBuell.
