The VIN confirms it's an '04.

Yesterday I acquired an XB engine and a few parts. Don't know if its a 900 or a 1200. Serial (Vin) number is 4MZA814J943426648 My thoughts are this is a 2004 motorcycle.
I bought this with hopes of using the engine in something else.
My questions are:
Am I correct in the year?
Is this a 900 or a 1200cc engine?
Can I do away with the FI and go with a carb? If so what manifold would I use?
What about spark if I dont use the computer.
Should I can this idea and use a different motor?
Has this been done by someone else that I can look into?
TO make a long story short I have a vintage M/C frame I want to out a new style V-twinn engine into and thought this might work.
The VIN confirms it's an '04.

Barrett: Thankyou for the link. This motor came out of a wrecked bike and the small round cover on the right side is all scratched up. Anything in the VIN that will tell me is its an XB9 or XB12? The vin is much easier to read then the engine number. I also got the main part os the frame, that's how I have the vin number.
Yes Sir my pleasure. Here's an attachment on how to decipher the 2003-2005 ALL BUELL XB VINS.
Everything you need to know. The last 5 numbers will tell you how far along the production run for that model year the bike was built.

The engine number is very hard to read but I think its AX114426648. Vin# 4MZAX14J943426648
That was super information. So if I read that correctly the bike I have (parts of) is a Firebolt (AX) with an XB12 (14) engine.
Thanks again for the information.
The engine/transmission is a great self contained power plant you can use in almost anything simply adding a battery, keeping the O2 sensor in the exhaust, and pressing start, reaping the benefits of a well designed OE system.
If you're afraid of using the OE wiring to have a functional F.I. system easily, you can alternatively use a 90* intake from a sportster and any appropriate carb like a CV40 or the ubiquitous upgrade to the Mikuni HSR42. The OE ignition system can still be used minus the FI, but if you also desire to eliminate the whole factory ECM, you'll need to add that part back, that you're removing, in the form of a stand alone ignition module like a Dyna.
All available from chopper shops that use sportster stuff.
IMO, The easiest way to tell a 9 from a 12 in a scrap motor is to either see the smaller headpipes (if it still has exhaust on it), or pull the primary cover off and look at the gears, because you'll want to inspect it anyway.
You're welcome. Your info is as follows:
ENGINE SERIAL # SHOWS IT IS A 2004 MODEL YEAR UNIT
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" IT IS INSTALLED IN R-FIREBOLT MODEL
VIN # SHOWS IT IS A 2004 MODEL YEAR ENGINE
"""""""""""""""""""""" A 1203CC DISPLACEMENT ENGINE
"""""""""""""""""""""" WAS BUILD DATE SOMEWHERE IN SPRING OF 2004
Cooter: thank you for your input. Any information is very helpful. About 8 months ago I found a 1948 Indian Chief frame that someone had tried to make into a chopper at some point in its life. Sense that time I have been looking for a motor to put in it, and I really did not want to use a metric motor. Buell, Victory or newer Indian were the only motors I wanted to consider. The Buell motor is much taller then the original, but the back bone of the frame has already been modified so with a few more mods I think it might fit. This motor popped up for a great price and and was close enough (2 hour drive) that I just had to go buy it. At this point I only have part of a wiring harness. Am I to understand that any Evo style Sportster intake from 86-03 will mate up to the heads? Or is there a certain year-style that I should be looking for?
Thanks again.
