Burnt out stator and testing regulator

Thanks Lunaticfringe. I did in fact see that thread, however I saw that is a 4 wire VR, whereas mine is a 5 wire (3 from stator, and 2 to battery) so didnt take it any further. If all else fails, I have a colleague going to the UK in a few weeks, so I may see if I can get an e-bay option...

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

So although the diode test was ok the 1st time round, now with the second failure they are testing open cct. I did double check against the wifes bike, so no mistake made, the regulator is toast as well. Buell regulators here are not available, so besides wiring, plugs and mounts which can be...

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

Thanks guys. When I had the stator rewound the 1st time, the charging voltage was correct. I dont want to risk the stator again, its a real PITA to remove it, so I'll just get a generic 38Amp regulator and be done with it.

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

The stator test I'm ok, with, was more interested in a better way to confirm the regulator is not damaged.

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

Ok the "new" stator, was a rewound one. This is South Africa, where these parts are not readily available. The test although not necessary since you could physically see the burnt wires, showed short to earth. I tested the regulator with a standard diode test on the input wires. Not much else I...

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

So to get back to this thread. After replacing the stator, I tested the charging voltage at around 14,6V at the battery, so all good Used the bike for a few weeks and then one day it wouldnt start again. Checked it all through , and the stator had burnt again. What am I missing ? I've done a...

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

Thanks guys. The stator is definitely faulty, or at least there is a short to earth from the plug to the stator when disconnected. My main concern is the state of the regulator, is there anyway to test it on its own ?? Lunaticfringe, I did check that plug out the first time, and again now, and...

Burnt out stator and testing regulator

Good day gents, and a prosperous new year to all. In November, after hitting an unavoidable pothole, The CEL came on and the motor almost died. I managed to nurse it to a fuel station about 2km further on, but then it would not turn over and gave symptoms of a dead battery. When I treid to jump...

    Dragging clutch

So just as a followup and leading on from Racepro's post, and since I wont have he new plates for several weeks, I took a chance on exploring the oil locking it up theory. Using a dremel tool with cutting wheel, I made cuts on each disc at the points where the segmentation would normally...

    Dragging clutch

HD want R2884.00 for the fibre plates, a direct conversion would put that at USD 200, except that they have no stock. So Barnetts ordered, and if all goes well, I'll expect them around mid December. So in the meanwhile I'll use it as is once or twice a week, but its the GSA for the rest. I'm...

    Dragging clutch

Exactly the thread I found last night. I have the part number, will call the local HD dealer today and see what they have. Thanks as always. Now can some kind knowledgeable person explain to me mechanically how a worn clutch drags as opposed to slipping All my other bikes have been either dry...

    Dragging clutch

Ok just a follow up on this. I havent used the bike since Feb because of this http://www.buellxb.com/forum/showthread.php?53220-Well-this-really-sucks&highlight=sucks so now its time to address the clutch. Tonight I pulled the clutch pack apart. I noticed on inspection that many of the fibre...

    Well this really sucks

Just to close the loop on this. I did pull the top and and jugs off front and rear, nothing wrong with bores, rings or crank. Had timeserts installed in both heads. Waited for months for a top end gasket set. I also pulled apart, cleaned and re-assembled the lifters Last weekend I put it all...

    Well this really sucks

Exactly why I want to pull the motor and check everything out. She does 80km a day, 80% of that at 140kmph( 4500 - 5000 rpm), so its not being used to knock around the suburbs on weekends.

    Well this really sucks

Thats most kind of you . I'm going to try get some locally, but if not, I may be knocking on your door to do a shipment for me.

    Well this really sucks

I've done roughly 19000km in the past 18 months (04 XB9SX). I replaced the plugs at 30000km, and the bike now has 49000, so new plugs are due at its next service. Well I never got that far. On the way home yesterday , just overtaken a car at about 140kmph, and just about to exit the highway...

    Dragging clutch

While I do agree that a clutch at its end has to be replaced, my symptoms should then always be there. My adjustment still has plenty to go, and the bite point is still where it should be. There is also no slip at all in any gear or any condition, and the drag only appears when hot. This is not...

    Dragging clutch

Hi all. 2006 XB9SX approx 48000 km. I have had the bike about 18 months, in which time I have put on about 18000 km. Since I got it, I've had the dragging clutch issue. I have on several occasions adjusted as per the correct procedure, and also adjusted the primary chain tension. About 3 months...

    Replacement Cooling Fan

I had to go this route 2 weeks ago. Following on from this thread http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/762330.html I ordered the fan on Amazon, had it delivered to a friend of a friend who was flying to SA 3 days later. So I had my fan within 5 days. Followed the above...
