    suspension is the main difference between the 3, they also all have different seats, the Ss a completely different tail. As for the newer model years the upgrades are based off weak points from years earlier so I would say it is a safe bet to say the newer bikes would be a better buy.

    Is it OK to run the lower shock ONLY?

    If you are just going to cruise the bike it should be fine but if you plan to push the bike the geometry of the bike will be messed up and the weight distribution will be as well with the back sitting low and the weight shifted backwards. I would just ride the bike with all the matching parts...

    drain gas

    Use some aluminum foil to cover everything around the drain plug area that may get gas on it and just put an oil pan under it and use a large mouth funnel to keep the gas from just draing all over.

    Tail lifts: WHY?

    I feel the lines of the Lightning tail are complimented with the subtle tail lift. Without it the tail seems flat and lacks a design flow. My old bike with my fiances bike before she got a tail lift as well.
