How much would you spend on a watch?

You’re right, it’s silly. I’m not rich, I just have a weakness for watches, but occasionally my conscience gets the better of me. On Dec 24, 2004, Christmas Eve, I had decided that I would buy myself a Rolex Air-King for Christmas. I picked one out & had the shop size the bracelet so I could...

How much would you spend on a watch?

You guys are LUCKY! I bought myself a Tissot Quadrato as a wedding present, to myself!

How much would you spend on a watch?

Nah! Just like motorcycles, it's nice to have a variety. I'd rather have a $10,000 sportbike, a $5000 dualsport, & a $5000 standard out in the garage than just one $20,000 Harley...

How much would you spend on a watch?

I have spent as much as $8000 on a Rolex Date-Just, as little as $250 on a Seiko Recraft. My only criteria is that a watch must have an automatic mechanical movement; no quartz! There's lots of great Swiss automatics using the ETA 2824 movement. Tissot, Hamilton, Rado, Longines, & Omega (all...

Is it worth the money and time?

Only you can answer whether it’ll be worth the money & time. I’d suggest that considering some of these points will help you decide: • Do you have a concept? I believe there are better donor bikes to make a bobber out of (goose mentioned a Sportser which I agree would work well) • How much...

    Is XB12SCG too low ?

The suspension of the SCG is what makes it lower. It's got less travel & a lower centre of gravity so the bike's not going to comply with the road, or flick from side to side, as well as the other XBs.

I wish I could do this with my Buells

I love kickstarters! Here I am kicking over my '72 75/5. Having said that, there's no need for them today. No point in dragging a starter motor AND a kickstarter around!

    Lightning long

I have always felt that the SS was the pinnacle of on-slab XBs, overcoming all of the XB's major shortcomings: limited fuel capacity, cramped cock-pit, & nervous front-end. However, that extra wheel base also made the turning-circle much larger, making for awkward low-speed maneuvering...

    Drive Belt

I'd be shopping for a new belt if it were my bike. I got a new one from ASB for much less than my local dealers quoted. In my experience, these belts have an average life expectancy on-par with a chain, perhaps longer or shorter in some extreme cases. They are susceptible to damage from...

how much should I be payed from geico?

Unfortunately, whether you're dealing with the resale market, or your insurance company, aftermarket upgrades don't count for anything. Some specialty insurance companies offer 'agreed value' coverage for custom & vintage vehicles, but it doesn't sound like that's what you've got. I'd...

    Erik Erik Erik...

Yea, I agree with what’s been said in the replies. In my experience, there’s nothing peculiar about the XB’s wheel bearing design, nor is there anything about the belt-drive that causes significantly higher bearing failure rates than you’d find with a typical chain-drive sport bike. I...

Something is not right, barely made it home.

Simple stuff first: Your battery cables are tight & clean? Fuel is clean & fresh? Ignition leads & plugs are good & tight?

    Ducati S4R S

True, though I rarely hear the Buell accused of being 'good-looking'! All I know is what I've consistently seen from riding buddy's Italian bikes over 25 years: they randomly quit working & require costly time-consuming visits to the shop. If you're fine with that, you'll be a satisfied owner...

    Ducati S4R S

It depends on your individual priorities. If you want good-looks, performance, character, & you have back-up transportation, & lots of time/cash/patience for repairs, then they are they are your dream bikes.

    Ducati S4R S

A riding buddy of mine used to have one. Definitely quicker than an XB12, but not massively quicker. The 6-speed trans allowed better acceleration than an XB, even without that much extra HP. Break-downs tho; OMG the break-downs... They were frequent, time-consuming, & costly...

How does a Harley xr1200 compare to lightning long?

Agreed! That was my point to the OP all along: You can slap some suspension & engine upgrades on a cruiser, but it'll fundamentally never handle like a sport bike. No comparison between an XB & XR...

How does a Harley xr1200 compare to lightning long?

I'm not sure *exactly* what's shared between the XR & XB motors, but having ridden both, it sure feels like the XB has wilder cams, a lighter flywheel, & more aggressive mapping.

How does a Harley xr1200 compare to lightning long?

Generally, yes. But the XRs actually had a racing series for several years in Canada: The XB Cup! Look closely in the video below & you'll see how squirrelly they are! Number 27 is the guy I knew; he died racing an XR a couple of years ago, RIP.

How does a Harley xr1200 compare to lightning long?

Yup, agreed. The purpose of the fuel-in-frame, the oil-in-swing-arm, & the underslung exhaust however is mass-centralization, not lowering the centre of gravity... Yup, it’s referred to as ‘tuned-flex’. As a bike leans, the suspension becomes less effective because it’s out-of-plane, so some...
