Let me preface this with a little background. I got my bike back in 2010? and there has always been an issue with hesitation either around 3k RPM or 4k RPM. The bike has a K&N filter, Jardine exhaust, and did have a Wiseco fuel management controller. I tried for the longest to play with the controller and tune but never had any luck. Eventually the hesitation got worse, RPMs would hang at idle even after TPS resets and then the bike started backfiring like crazy on decel. I had other stuff going on at the time and just said screw it and stopped riding.
Fast forward to 1.5 years later (current time) and here is what I've done to the bike so far:
Changed oil, changed plugs, changed plug wires, breather reroute, extra ground wire to the ignition coil, TPS reset, some Seafoam in the tank and removed the Wiseco controller. I've done a lot of other cosmetic/maint type things but nothing that would be related to the way the bike runs. I then took it out on a ride and it still ran rather poorly. So, I set the ECM back to stock and loaded a fuel map which a user had uploaded (forgot who/where) for his 06 XB9 with the same mods and of course did another TPS reset.
I went out for a ride and the bike ran GREAT. This is the best the bike has ever ran since I bought it from the previous owner. The revs were very smooth, no hesitation anywhere, very little popping on decel, and the RPM hangs were gone. The butt dyno said that I could be making more power too! Well here I am about 90 miles later and it is running poorly again. There's sometimes hesitation from the get-go, there's the 4k RPM hesitation, and there's lots of loud popping on decel. It doesn't seem quite as bad as it had previously been but seems to be getting worse the more I ride.
I imagine that this is the result of the computer adjusting and attempting to "correct" a tune which I feel like was already correct. I also imagine that you guys will tell me I need to data log before any help can be given, which I do plan to do eventually. What I'm wondering is, are there any common things I could look at first? Like is this behavior typical of some sensor going bad or something? I'm supposed to go on a long group ride next week and won't be able to go if my bike is running like crap so hopefully it's an easy fix.
TL : DR version:
bike ran like crap.. hesitation and popping
did maint and normal fixes
tuned
ran great for <100 miles but runs like crap again
what to do?
