hello, i just recently purchased a 2006 lightning xb9sx. i drove it home about 30 miles on tuesday when i bought it and took it home, ran ok. parked it once i got home and did nothing else to it. i started it today(wed) and it started rough(wouldnt hold idle well, blew out smoke in the front right after startup). after keeping the throttle open a bit to let it warm up a bit it began to hold an idle and then i geared up and went for a ride. after about 3 blocks and it sputtered and died. i walked it home and threw it on the charger and tired it again. nothing, sprayed starting fluid down the throttle plentum and nothing, im new to v-twins and i could really use some help or tips on what to do. it throws a check engine after i try cranking it for 5 secs or so. any and all help is apprechiated!

What's the deal, this just happened to me! So frustrating
I thought I had a corner on frustration when I took mine to dealer while under warranty. Just recently I had an intermittant starting problem that took the dealer 4 weeks to fix. What ultimately did the trick was a new starter switch, which is what I suggested after the first attempt. Meanwhile, they replaced the battery, starter, starter relay, remapped and cleaned all points of contact 3 times. This is a replacement bike (lemon law) for the first bike that took the dealer in Little Rock 6 weeks and 6 tries in 2010.(ECM) That was in March and April. July 4th weekend that bike lost the rear bearing, axle and wheel traveling 75 in Montana. Bike sat in Beartooth H-D from that weekend until sometime in Sept. Missed Sturgis (at least on that bike). How's all that for frustration? At least H-D did send a new bike to me.

If the CEL stays on after you quit cranking use the jumper method and see what the CEL is...might help diagnosis
