07 XB12R Clutch removal

Ok, so I just finished installing the 1250 kit on the bike and got everything buttoned up. Now to install the new clutch....oh wait I cant get the damn thing apart....[mad]

I dont want to spend $100 on the special tool to compress the diaphram spring... Ive tried a couple different ways with some pvc and metal bar but that isnt working.

I have searched some videos and all they do is talk about what to do which doesnt help...

Anyone have some pointers or pics that might help get this thing apart?

I bought the Barnett tool from ASB for $59. haven't done it without the tool, I'm sure someone will chime in with some tips, good luck.

After I did a DIY fork spring compressor tool, which I saw someone do entirely too easily online, I decided I'd learned my lesson and bought the tool for the clutch. I found mine on amazon. I think it was around $60 bucks.
Shoot if you PM me your address I'll send you mine. Just reimburse me the shipping cost.
And of course ship it back when you're done

Update,

I used a piece of scrap 1/4 stock and a 3" ID piece of PVC and got it to work.

Just needed to walk away from it for a day or so lol.

Don’t bother cutting a piece of pipe just get the end cap. Drill a hole in the center. Use two washers, two nuts and one bolt. So the final order should be that the to nuts runn them to the top shoulder of the bolt loosethen slid the two washers on after the nuts. Place the end cap against the clutch slid the bolt though the hole then thread it into the clutch bolt then runn the two nuts down to rest on the plastic end cap the lock the two nuts together then tighten the bolt to release the clutch ring/clip unscrew the bolt and the clutch plates will now come out.

It’s about $10 in parts to make one. If you are planning on doing more then 4 clutch replacement it’s better to buy the bullet and buy the real tool.

Making your own tools is always iffy.

I made my own fork spring compressor, but didn't have the 'right' things to make my clutch compressor. That I bought. Sometimes, its not worth it, other times, time in the garage making a tool is fun.

I've made my own fork spring compressor too out of a Quick-clamp and it worked well, but after spending $18 for a true tool meant for the job, I'd recommend doing that the first time.

The clutch spring is MUCH stiffer. IMO, I wouldn't risk stripping the bolt or sending the parts flying across the shop or into your face or damaging your valuable hands... $60 is worth it for that job. Think of how much you're saving already by doing the job yourself!

Go on eBay you can find them there. Bought mine for $28.00 and works great. Like Cooter said buy the tool for the job. It will make your life easier. Sure you will need again at some point or you can sell it.
