1st time poster, I admire the Buells and now Im to the point I want one. I found an XB12R close to me for a cheap price. The seller is 3rd party and dosent know how it happend but the shifter lever is missing and the clutch cover is cracked. The bike has 7k miles, a 2007 xb12r, no other damage. Is this a decent repair or should i just keep looking? What would i be looking at spending for a new case cover? Thanks.
Ben

Replacing the cover should be pretty simple and not horribly expensive. I would have him take the cover off so that you can inspect underneath since the bolts look like they are off already.

Also - welcome to the forum :)

very easy to repl someone probably lowsided when the shifter hits the ground it sometimes cracks the cover right through the bolt hole

Tell him its going to cost alot to fix and you don't know what you'r going to find when you open it up and then tell him 2000 is as high as you'll go.If he says any thing just say you'r looking at an 08 for 3800 and it isn't busted. Might work

Good luck on the purchase, it should be easy and inexpensive to fix. Just be sure to really inspect the primary and clutch pack. Also check the shift rod if it is bent even a little, replace it.

"Heeeeellllllll Noooooooooo"
i would not pay $3000 for that bike unless it was in bermuda and i lived in bermuda and for some reason they let it on the island. (can only have a 50cc motorcycle on the island)
wow... sorry for that was a rant[confused]
i would have a hard time paying $1000 it looks like the bikes been layed down (oil cooler covers scuffed up)and there are some other strange things going on rear foot set looks bent like a car hit the primary and tweaked everything or the clutch basket spring went ghost and **** got ground up and exploded in the primary.
so basically best case scenario
primary $100-150
primary chain tensionor $30
shifter linkage $30
shift shaft arm $23
shifter $48
clutch retaining ring $12
clutch adjuster $60
oil $8
gaskets $40
total of $401 not counting shipping and doing the work yourself
worst case you have a 385 lbs how ever much you payed for it lawn ornament
:(

I'm gonna go with Squid on this one Ben. I think there's something else going on here other than a lowside. The peg is still there but that's the first thing to break off, and there's no scuff marks on the clutch cover. Look real close at the end of the cable, it looks crushed and bent. I bet there's a fair bit of hidden damage that we can't see. Good luck, Wayne

Good catch on the foot peg bracket Squid - had to take another close look and it does look like the front of the bracket doesn't sit flush with the frame. If the bike's local, then I would have the owner buy the list of parts, do the work to fix it, and prove that that's all the damage, then take it for a test ride.

Outer primary cover has no bolts, take it off and see what it looks like in there? Bolt missing from the rear set as well, was it replaced? 2G?....... for sure!

PASS! trust me its better that you wait it out and find something that you will like and will last you. First couple bikes i looked at were in need of some work but there could be so many underlying problems with something like this unless you can get it for like 1500 i say pass.

I went and looked at it today, I took the cover off and this is what i saw...

There is a tooth broken off on the freewheeling part, the shifter peg does wiggle, the case is cracked all the way, the tensioner looks to be fine, the foot peg is loose because it appears that one of the bolts that hold it on is also a bolt for the cover. I checked the bike over and i couldnt find any other hard damage, the frame and wheels are all damage free. 3400 is low as he is willing to go, so i guess ill keep looking... Anyone know a good XB12R in the south for a good price?

BOOOOOOMMMM:eek::eek::eek:[mad][mad][mad]

clutch retaining ring failure seen it on a sporty once before. did it crack the right side of the engine block too[confused] i can't tell the primary chain is in the way... but yeah looking at it now you need a whole new clutch basket, flywheel (can see a couple of teeth missing) and probably a new stator (magnets don't like **** banged on them) but it seams to me the person who owns it already knows that (looks to clean almost like a shop class WyoTech crap bike). there is way to much work for that price period.
"move on" there are way better bikes out there...
just think a $12 dollar part caused all that damage:(
