My 08 XB12 is leaking from the oil filter.... it splatters. I tightened the filter... still leaked so I performed an oil change and put a new filter on. I felt confident this would take care of it... but it didn't. Has anybody experienced this or have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Are you cross threading the filter and thinking it's tightened all the way but not ? Are you put a little oil on the filter gasket to create a good seal ? I've never had this issue .

yeah.. I am sure its fine. It just started leaking. I am kind of doubting myself now! It may be leaking from where my Jardine slip-on connects? I cant really tell. It is a decent amount leaking.

Yes indeed. The old o-ring from the filter may have stuck on. Also make sure the o-ring wasn't stolen off the filter. Sometimes people steal the o-rings and buy a cheaper filter.

Good luck [confused]

By "O-Ring," do you mean the square section sealing gasket on the filter?

There's also an oil line that runs along the right side of the engine; you can check any fittings along that line. (Sorry, it's too cold to go out and look for specifics...)

I believe the spec for tighting is 1/2 - 3/4 turn after seal lightly seats on the surface.

Overtightening will cause a leak.

BTW, the easiest way to find the source of the leak is to first clean the area free of oil. Then get some foot powder spray and spray down the area. The oil will then show up really well allwoing you to find the source.

what brand and part number of oil filter do you have?
did the dealer or parts store give you the wrong size or you accidently bought the wrong size take a second look at the part number.
( i have seen parts in the wrong box before always double check it before buying it)

if you have the wrong part number for that brand of oil filter the size maybe wrong and the gasket may not be sealling correctly.(usually because the gasket is to wide or to narrow to contact the machined surface where the oil filter is installed on.

I cleaned the bike yesterday removed all the leaked oil from the filter areas and gave it a good strong run of about 30mins. I inspected the oil filter and it does not seem to be leaking from there. I am now convinced that it is indeed coming from the exhaust!! The way it is splattered around and on the oil filter indicated it is coming from the exhaust. There are a three little slots from where the elbow from the Jardine slip-on slip to the header manifold. The leak is clearly coming from there as there are three streaks from where each slot is. I have the slip-on and a K&N air filter on the bike now. I am running a stock ECM still.

Could this possibly be the reason? Oil out of the exhaust is worrying me.

The clamp that attaches the exhaust is tight.

My oil filter is a Mobil 1 Extended Performance M1-103. I had the filter on for 3 months prior to any leaks. There is now a brand new one (same kind) on as of 15 JAN 11.

Thank you all for the help!

I will try to post a few pictures soon!
