First let me introduce myself. I just bought a Buell Lightning and have been having a great time. Owned it about 1 month now. This is my first post, but I hope to be active.

Now the problem.
About a weak ago the bike began a cough or choke (not sure how to define it) between 2500 and 3000 rpm's. It has since become worse and now does the same thing unless I'm full power, and even then once or twice. Not sure if it is miss firing, if it's the fuel pump, or fuel injection. With even throttle the bike will run, stutter, run, and so on. I changed the spark plugs and the problem didn't go away.

Any suggestions? Anyone else experienced something similiar?

Year and model of your Buell?

Stutters at the low RPM range is pretty common, but it shouldn't be happening all the time.

1st spark plugs (done already)
2nd bad connection of spark plugs cables
3rd corroded plugs at ECM
4th any air flow problem
5th no idea, see the dealer (bike dealer 1st)

Such problems will be your companion all the way you ride a Buell and thats the reason why we love them... welcome

just had a similar prob with my 04 xb 12r. the bike sat for about a year, only getting started and ran a mile or so every few months. got ready to start puttin it back together, started, and let it warm up to change the oil, and it wouldn't take any fuel at all unless you just cranked it and held the throttle open. try to slowly bring the revs up and it would die avery time.tried new plugs, fuel injector cleaner and everythingelse i could come up with and no change. downloaded ecmspy and got a cable to try a tps reset.again no change, but noticed the tps voltages were erratic when you twist throttle.replaced tps, now bike runs smoother than it ever has. can't say how much the tps cost is(got mine from a buddy w/ a totaled xb9). it wasn't too difficult to change on my 12, but the wiring is routed different on a 9 and it's a bit of a
PITA to get out of there.there's a button towards the top of the page that has service manuals you can download. and all kinds of info on here about ecmspy.
hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply's. I'm going to get started working down the list tomorrow. Look forward to sharing some good news with you all.

I only put in Premium (91)

Just an update.

I took the bike apart and couldn't find any problem. Checked all the wires, connections and fuses. Put things back together and it runs great. No clue what I did, but it must have been a loose connection or something of that nature. I'm just waiting for it to start acting up again now.

Let me explain alittle deeper, also when at idle I can pull the throtle back fast and it will almost die and back fire. I have to ease on the gas at first to go to high rpm's. and I am using 91 in it.

stewart, there's some other posts/threads on here involving, some wires om the fuel pump rubbing/chaffing and how guys have fixed it. i'd do a thorough check of external wiring first, but sounds like this might be worth checking out if you can't find any other probs.

Well no luck yet, so I'm changing my oil and spark plugs now and I'm going to try the breather remod and see what happens.

stewart2, is it still blowing fuel pump fuse?

If not, does it run enough to ride at all?If so, have you tried a tps reset?
