Just picked up a 07 xb with 8,000 miles on it, bike looks like brand new but has no 3rd gear. This will be xb number 4 for my collection now and have not had any trans problems with any, so I do find this to be a bit strange. When I test drove it I did notice that if I revved it in 3rd it would grind like it wanted to go into gear. I drained the primary fluid and removed the case as soon as I got home and found no metal chunks or even any sparkles in the fluid which really made me scratch my head. Anyways, I have the engine on the floor now but have to wait for a clutch tool to show up before I can go any farther. Just curious if anyone else has had a issue like this and/or any tips for what's next, I have never had to split the case on a xb until now.

Thanks,

You dont need a clucth tool. The clutch doesnt need to be pulled apart. The primary and clutch assembly come off all together. After that remove top end, tip leave pistons in cylinders by tapping the wrist pins out with the pistons at the bottom of the jugs. Youll also need to pull the cam cover, and becareful not to drop or scatter the cams, put them in a clean safe place. Removing the rear isolator is a bitch, i used a 1/4 drive bit and a wrench with a breaker bar, an allen wrench wont fit. Youre also suppose to replace those bolts on assembly, why ????? Once youre read to split the cases prepare for a mess, a few taps with a rubber mallet should help pull it apart. Have fun cause going back together is another monster!

I also had issues with third gear, cracked and rounded dog ring, bent shift fork. Replace all the forks they are cheap, the transmission will require pressing out, dog rings replaced, and pressed together with new bearings

Thanks Crash, I don't think I understand the clutch removal sequence yet. The service manual shows the clutch needing to be disassembled.

Every time I read about transmission work it makes me look forward to the job myself less and less ... lol

Ive had to do 3 Buell Case splits so far, probably a tuber case here soon, and for sure going into my cyclones transmission at the end of july, im kinda tired of it.

my bike has just under 50,000miles and has just lost all gears, lets hope that it is an easy fix for the BIKE SHOP.. sorry just not confident that i wont have any spare bolts, bearings left over... but if i could take time off work to watch.. be easy next time.. at 100,000 miles right?

What is the best way to prevent this? Or is itJust bad luck, speed shifting, popping the clutch, doing burnouts, wheelies,...? Asuming everything is maintained...
