So I thought I would take a crack at vinyl wrapping the tail section of my lightning. I bought some cheaper carbon fiber wrap off eBay and I think that was my major mistake is buying cheap vinyl. Watched a lot of YouTube tutorials on vinyl wrapping. Thought I had the technique fairly well down but couldn't get the outcome that I was hoping for. Is there anybody on the Forum with any experience doing vinyl wrap? Did I screw up buying cheap vinyl or do I just suck?

3M for sure. I've tried the cheap stuff before with predictable results...

And pay attention to the ambient temp. A warm day or a warm garage is much, much, easier than a heat gun. It's a fairly narrow margin between cold and stiff, or too hot and thin.

It's a matter of practice. I think I'm pretty good, then I watch guys do a pointy helmet, or a gas tank and it puts me in my place quick!

Well, I think you guys are just reinforcing what I already assumed. 4 one I do suck, lol! It's pretty chilly in the basement, probably 60. Used an old blow drier. Tried the tail section twice then some random parts(simpler than the tail)then a half helmet. Fail, fail, fail! Didn't take any pics, too embarrassing! I could get it about 3/4 of the way stretched over the helmet, but then wanted to shrink back and not adhere well. So, it seems you getwhat u pay 4 in vinyl.

And you're picking very hard stuff to do! Compound curves bring the suck:( Start with good wrap and try easier stuff, you'll get it!

i know right, nothing like diving in with both feet lol! at least i only wasted a few dollars worth of material. Not near as bad when (in my rookie years) i ruined a Dodge "daytona" hood billboard sticker because i didnt let the panel cool off long enough after bringing it in the shop. No way i was pushing bubbles out of that baby any spot that the (i use alcohol and water for decals)solution slipped out of stuck RIGHTNOW. $200 and some odd sticker..... I proceeded to to simply paint it on :D!

i will try again and post results. Thanks guys!

I didn't want to get into complex curves, so I did a digital camo job on my bike. It just cheap vinyl from Ebay. The lower cowling is spray Plasti-dip with metallic Sharpie. I used some Obey stickers to make a racing stripe.

If it's vinyl wrap, contact Gatorwraps, they wrap all kinds of crazy things. You might also want to check Gatorprints. They have branches and installers located in just about every large city and they have lots of vinyls to choose from.
