Theres a tool just for that or use 2 nuts. Thread them on to the stud and tighten them against each other and use a wrench on the bottom one to loosen the stud.

the threads broke off inside the screw :(

I tried using vice grips but they seem to just rip the metal off without any progress.

a couple inches, there's just a little more than a cm of threads left. I have plenty to grip onto just no threads to use.

I have used this to get a broken stud out of the turbo hot side housing in my car. Apply heat to the head near the base of the stud with a torch. I have used a propane torch, it should be more than capable, you do not want anything hotter to damage anything. Touch a candle to the stud and you should be able to see the wax get drawn into the threads on the head. Grab the stud with a good pair of pliers or vice grips and it should come out.

I found a video on YouTube that may help.
Remove with heat and candle

anrkizm, know what it's called before I run out there and look through the whole store?

another suggestion that I got from xopti was to use a pipe wrench. I didn't have that so I let him know what I used.
