hello, first post here, i have an 05 xb9sx, i bought totaled and rebuilt as a chopper, which im sure is frowned upon a bit here, but while doing a rebuild this winter, broke the pcv valves. found new ones online for $9.00 a piece, but was wondering if any of the buell guys have anything nicer they're using? Anything aluminum, or flush mounted valves,.. just thought i'd ask..

I'm not aware of any.

And just FYI, we frown upon destroying a perfectly good buell. Taking a wrecked one for parts is A-O-K in my book [up]

You could drill your heads and install rocker boxes from an XL. You would have all the options made for XLs then. I have seen some very stubby thread-in breathers but you would be wiping away oil on a regular basis.

Not anything can think of that "off the shelf" but im sure you could use some small pod filters of some kind... or you could drill and tap the heads to run a standard breather/air cleaner. In your other post looks like the carb isn't supported at all anyways.

i've seen the small pods, but dont the buells need the pcv ( one way valves) or check valves? thats why i came to this forum. sportys just need a breather. i was under the impression the buell needed the pcv and someone would have made up some kickass looking device to satisfy eriks needs heree....

Really any engine needs a crankcase vent. Whether it's a breather or pcv valve(I'm not sure what you're considering the difference between the two), they perform the same function.

You can do it that way and I usually agree with most if not all of what Eric says. But the XL design flat out sucked! All the Tube frame guys go to the XB design sooner or later.

i thought the sportys just used a filter so you don't suck any particles into the heads, and the buell xb used a pcv valve, which as far as i know will let air leave the head, but not suck any air in. like a check valve, No?

That is correct the buell uses pcv valves (one way/check valves). I don't see why it would matter, though. It's ok to let the crankcase suck air in, just needs to be filtered air.

I'm pretty sure most engines are set up to have a breather on one valve cover and a pcv on the other valve cover. This allows air to come in one side and out the other. Not sure but pretty sure, anyway.

the buell xb used a pcv valve,
buells use a one way umbrella valve they dont have true pcv valves.umbrella valves release pressure when it reaches a certain point.pcv valves are variable flow valves based on engine vaccum and spring tension.you could run any type of umbrella valve or breather set up with no problems.the stock buell system is nothing more than a 1940s era road draft tube as air passes over the tubes in the air box it helps pull gases from the engine.

Anrkizm95 is right. The Buell XB valve is the same style as what the 04+ XLs have. The location is the only difference. The XL rocket boxes are relieved and threaded to fit their internal umbrella valve assembly where as the XB rocker box lid hole is for the XBs umbrella valve assembly. The only real difference is where the air is released. I suppose the XB design gives the oil vapor more surfaces to condense on before the air leaves the engine yielding less oil vapor to deal with, but they both use the same style valve. I even cut an XB breather apart to see what is inside and it's the same.

Red93stang, there is a big difference in the 3 piece rocker box umbrella valve setup vs the 2 piece (newer design used on 04+ XLs and all XBs).

well heres what i came up with. when the plastic one broke, my original thought was to tap the plastic 1/8'' and use a 1/8'' npt to AN6 fitting and run the tubing into the intake manifold like i had before, but while tapping it, the whole plastic thing split open, i was initially pissed, because i thought i would have to order new ones now, but after seeing inside the thing, theres no valve at all, just a little cheapo foam filter.. so i made some up out of aluminum, has a 1/8'' hole with 2 side ports at the bottom, and a 1/8''npt 90 to AN6 out the top, and will be running polished aluminum tubing into the intake.

I thought there was a ball in there. When I blow through mine you can hear the ball moving. I'm not sure that it's spring loaded like a typical pcv valve but there's definitely something in there rattling around.

nope, the first pic you can see the stock on in half, at the top the large opening was a foam filter, and theres a green rubber disc sitting on top of it. thats probably what moves back and forth, but it still was allowing air to flow both ways.

I wonder if there's different versions. I can only blow through mine in one direction. If I try to blow back through the other way something(I assume a ball) closes the passage.

Looks real good though.

The green disc is the one-way valve. It's the same valve that is used in the newer XL assemblies and the Twin Cams. If is is working correctly, you should only be able to pull air through the barbed end and not blow air in.
