So I currently own an XB9R Firebolt with the factory race kit (Race ECU and Exhaust). I performed the open air box mod and figured(from what i read) I wouldnt really have to tune due to the race ecu. Ever since the mod I have been getting a lot of decel popping as well as some bogging when i go to open her up. The idle at startup is also really rough and stalls out some times which has never really happened before that i can remember. Has anyone else had this issue with the open air-box mod? I don't have the stock air box cover to revert back to to see if this fixes the problem unfortunately because it was used in the mod. I tried disconnecting the battery to see if it would help any but to no avail. Any information would be great!

Thanks , Matt

This is one of those 'controversial' mods in that many have done it with zero issues and a sense of better performance, some have felt no changes, and some have had some issues as you described above. My experince with it was positive.

Probably not a bad idea to do a tps reset and/or maybe some tuning tweaks. I don't personally have any tuning experience, but there are many on here who do and could be of some help. A certain amount of decel popping is just part of our bikes. Unless it's just out of control, I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Just altering the intake should not cause any running issues like you describe. It sounds like you have some other issue that needs to be resolved. Like netty said, make sure the TPS is set correctly and that you have no intake gasket leaks, fuel pressure is within spec, and the exhaust system is leak free. So often the real cause of the problem is overlooked when a small modification is made and the bike seems to run poorly afterwards.

Thanks everyone for their input! The only thing that leads me to believe that this is the cause is because I didnt have any of the issues until the intake mod. I'm not sure if the change of airflow has disrupted the air/fuel proportion causing it to run like this. The engine is sound with no leaks and with the boggyness during high RPM's i dont think the TPS would effect this. Im gonna try a fresh tank of gas and see what happens because those are the only two variables since these symptoms started occuring.

I have an '05 xb9sx, Race Maps, D&D exhaust, Open air box w/ K&N filter, breather re-route. After any mod I make that affects the engine, I always do a TPS reset and reset the AFV to 100. Then I go for a nice10-15 min ride staying between 2k-4k rpms, making sure to shift through all the gears, and easy on the throttle. Basically go for a leisurely cruise. It puts the ecm in closed loop mode and allows the ecm to adjust to the new conditions. Right now in my bike the AFV stays right around 104% with 91 octane and around 99% with 100 octane unleaded race fuel (which I run frequently)
