Hi Guys. New to this forum. Joined to get information on header replacement on my 2009 XB12scg. Thanks to several "how to's" and a YT video managed to do it today by removing the rear shocker. Problems I had were 1) getting the silencer off the header - wooden mallet and a lot of patience 2) removing the O2 sensor - couldn't undo it insitu so cut through the exhaust and extracted it upwards still on the pipe. Why the hell was it so tight? 3) fitting the new gaskets into the engine - gently drifted them in trying not to squash them 3) fitting the silencer on to the new header - eased it on with a 3" fence post as a lever underneath. The bit I thought would be really hard - getting the nuts off the studs was relatively straight forward. They were almost hand tight and a 1/4 drive with knuckle did the job well.

Now the worrying bit. I have a bolt left which I don't recall removing. Pictures attached but it has two washers and a cone. The head is knurled with a small hex socket.* It has a plain shaft just under 8 mm diameter and a threaded end approx 6mm diameter.
Anyone have an idea where this is from. *

rick: is your exhaust totally stock? if so i have never seen that grouping of hardware anywhere on a stock XB exhaust system and i've removed probably 50 of them in the past 20 years.....at least in the hardware/cowling area. the serrated edges around the bolt itself typically denotes metric. try and thread a standard sae nut onto it and see if sae or metric but appears metric. perhaps it was installed by a PO to hold the lower cowling in place which takes 2 allens on left...2 on front....3 on right. that shouldered shaped washer might be the clue. removing a stock muffer from the headpipe is quite simple: spray penetrant down the flange of the header...let soak...remove all 3 clamps.....wiggle muffler up and down and sideways and it slips right off. trick is to gently wiggle as above and pull down. installation is simply lube up the inlet of the muffler where it engages the header flange...slides right on. COLE: you ever see this odd looking thing?????

Everything is stock and I've had the bike from new. It's been serviced by Harley Dealers so can't imagine they'd bodge the screw. Not the same thread as any of the tappings on the lower fairing. Almost midnight here (UK) so I'll check out what thread it is tomorrow. Thanks.
