Hello folks, I recently watched the excellent and informative video by Jeremy Dearringer on how to change your engine and primary oil here (it appears to be an 'R' model XB):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMuEHcP6iws

Engine oil looks easy enough; however in the video at around 4:11, he removes the leftmost panel on the primary cover in order to put new lubricant into the primary. The '05 Buell XB9SX manual (p.92 in PDF, p.1-26 in book) has you removing the rightmost panel (named the "Clutch Inspection Cover") in order to replace lubricant.

Is this something different between the R and S models? I had thought them pretty similar, but I'm quite new to Buells so I wanted to be absolutely sure before I start wrenching on mine. Any advice is appreciated.

It is easier to fill the primary usng the "round" one. Not sure you can use that one on the sidestand though. (I THINK it has to be nearly straight up to get the whole quart in there?). I use stands when I do mine, so I'm not sure.

I use the chain inspection cover, which he uses in the video instead of the clutch inspection cover. For me its easier to slide a funnel nozzle under the chain and fill her up. Either will do, inspect the gasket and change as needed. Be careful not to over torque those screws...its really easy. Just get them nice and snug and it will be good. I stripped one out on accident. Cheers!

Thanks much for the info guys, this is extremely helpful. Will order some gaskets just in case I need them for the oil change. I have a digital torque wrench to make sure I get the torque settings precise on the bolts, have made too many mistakes in the past in that regard :)

Chain inspection cover is good, i use a funnel with a peice of garden hose and it slides in nice under the chain

Sorry to ask yet another question, but in the video he puts in a full quart of lubricant. In the manual (pg 1-26) it says to fill it up:

"as required until fluid level (3) is even with bottom of clutch diaphragm spring (2)."

I'm in the middle of doing this and have reached the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring well before 1q is poured in. Is it ok to keep going beyond the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring or should I stop here?

Thanks again for all the help.

Are you on the side stand, or on a race stand? The primary case should take a full quart to fill to the bottom of the clutch if the bike is vertical.

Bike's vertical (race stand) and I also very thoroughly emptied it prior (waited about 30m for the old fluid to drain). It looks like I'm pretty close to 1q in but not quite, even though I'm at bottom of clutch. I think I'll just finish it off for good measure - thanks cytosis!
