I was able to pick up a set of genuine Buell carbon fiber heel guards for my xb9sl. When I put them on, I noticed that the mounting holes are slightly different - the original aluminum ones are tapered holes so that the bolts sit flush. The carbon fiber ones have smaller, non tapered holes, so the existing bolts stick out a bit and are not able to be torqued down without risking cracking the cf.
Any suggestions?

That's what I wonder. Should I go for something with a rounded head, or something that matches the engine bolts?
Should I stick to Grade 8 bolts, or is that overkill?
Should I put some kind of locktite on the threads, or is vibration not really a problem?
I have no idea...

Loctite EVERYTHING! Your pants, jacket, boots and gloves too just to be safe. :D:p

Back to your original question though, I think this:
SSTL buttonheads
nailed it.

I used a stainless socket head screw, almost 1k miles with no problems. I like the button head idea though might have to run to the hardware store.

I have the same challenge with the carbon fiber front fender on my XB12Scg. The "shoulder" on the bolts for the OEM fender do not sit flush on the CF fender Making the run to the hardware store this weekend so this thread is timely for me.
