Well Id like to start out by introducing myself to the forum! My names Thomas Secrest. I've owned an 07 Buell XB12R, but sold it a couple years ago. My Dad however did not, and unfortunately wrecked his 2004 xb12r that was in great shape last June. Lowsided on some gravel in a corner and the bike went into oncoming traffic and right into another car, causing a hole in the frame. Dad turned out alright, Buell however, not so great. It was still able to be ridden, but the frame and subframe were hammered. Insurance salvaged it and he bought it back. Fast forward a year and an 04 Buell XB12R pops up on craigslist "trade for boat". Well Dad had an old ski boat sitting out back, so the guy made the trade. The "new" Buell had also been down and did not run, but overall was in fair shape, threw new plugs in, she fired right up and rode great! So we swapped the best parts between the two bikes and made the best of one that we could, which came out pretty clean, and when it was all said and done, we had a whole second running riding Buell, minus frame. This is where things actually get interesting. I decided I wanted to build a custom frame around this Buell powerplant and suspension. So, this is where Im going to document the build. Its going to be a single tube backbone made of chromoloy. Im working with a chassis shop out of Chico CA who will be helping me with building the frame. The throttle body will be rotated 90 degrees to be a side draft carb. I will try and post as many pics as possible, and am open to ideas and criticism. Well Im not sure if anyone is even paying attention to this thread, but just in case, I figure Ill give a little update. I dropped off the motor and the old frame at the chassis shop on sunday. Talk about some impressive cars, Matts shop was very impressive and I havent even seen his machine shop yet! Today he is starting on building the jig for the frame, and hopefully will start bending some tube here soon. With that being said, if anyone else is interested in a frame, let me know, while he has the jig together it makes things alot simpler and eliminates the need of mocking up the motor again. Also, I have a ton of extra xb parts including a 2008 frame with a clean title and no damage. And just about all the fairings and everything else from two different xb12r's. The 08 was white and the 04 was red. So let me know if anyone is interested in parts, or if youre interested in a frame. Also, still open to input. Thanks!

It seems like a lot of engineering and custom builds work around the premiss that nothing will ever break or need to be replaced. As we all know this is never the case. The original bike that motor came out of was built so that maitanance was fairly simple. Sure an engine rotation takes a Saturday afternoon the first time but after that one time it gets pretty easy.
Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is I like the idea of a custom frame and what not, I just hope you keep the things that may go wrong with the engine in mind.
Also would be cool if the top tube or frame itself was fat enough to double as your oil tank. Don't think I've seen that done before.

So its been quite some time, but I just saw this thread. Im STILL waiting for my frame to be finished, and lets just say, Im not too happy about it. Ive been told it will be done many times, and almost a year later and $1600, still no frame. Was supposed to be finished by the end of june. As for your concerns chicknstripn, I hear them. I expect things to break, but if anything, this will allow the motor to be more accessible than original frame design. While oil in the back bone would be neat, it moves the weight higher on the frame raising the center of gravity. Ill keep the oil in the swingarm. Plus one for the idea though. :eagerness: Hopefully within the next couple weeks my frame and fuel cell should be done and Ill update the pictures.

You could seriously have a decent fab shop make one from scratch for probably >$700... Its 2 angles on the backbone and one miter cut for the headstock. Everything else is 90* or flat stock.

Helped a friend a little when he made this with one of those frames:
