Hi, I have just purchased a 2004 xb12r firebolt as a none runner. I was told that it needed a new coil wich I bought and fitted, still no go so I did my own fault finding and found that the cam sensor is not turning when the engine is cranked! not knowing a lot about the bike I need a bit of help please, has any one got any ideas?

as Red eluded to, the sensor is stationary

If the timing cup doesnt spin it could be a bad deal. You will have to pull the cam cover and see why. How many mile are on the motor?

oil pump gear worn.
oil pump blocked.
pinion gear key sheared.

thanks for the info it's a great help, just eager to hear the thing running! have never heard american music before! buell's are a bit rare in the uk seems to be all jap stuff! but they say once you owned a buell nothing else compairs!

It's not a bad job. Get yourself a service manual and dig in. When you pull the nose cone, do it slow so you don't scatter the cams across the floor.

Hi guys, found my problem! cam gear key sheared off! have stripped the engine removed all four cams, the cam bushes in the crank case were all showing excessive wear marks! so replaced all four cam bushes rebuilt the oil pump and replaced oil filter and ofcourse oil.Have fired it up ( the first time in four years) and it sat ticking over but very clattery gave it a rev and it blew out the oil filter seal!:( so it seems it has an oil block some ware wich probably caused the original fault, any ideas guys? would make my day to sort this but after all my hard work am running out of ideas :(

idk. if i were you id start from the oil pump and follow the path of the oil looking for problems. which doesnt sound very fun...at all.

dipper: this might be redundant as i know you mentioned in your post that you rebuilt the oil pump but is the oil pump check valve working ok? i'm 99% sure it has one and seems like this could be the source of your problem. someone with more oil pump knowledge than i please chime in here.

Also did you change to oil pump gear. This is a weak spot on these bikes. You can order a new and improved one that differs in material from the one you have in the 04. You should have when the bike was apart.

ok thanks guys, will just have to go through everything piece by piece and see where the blokeage is:(
