Changed the oil - bit of a shock

Hi all
My 03 XB9R has been sitting for six years before I bought it.
I drained the oil today and oh man....talk about sludgy. Some liquid came out but so did this thick run of sludgy stuff. I have never seen anything like it.
I also replaced the oil filter of course - and it didn't seem sludged up at all.
My question: should I remove and clean out the oil pump? I have no idea what sort of a mission that is, but the state of the oil has me concerned that the pump may be sludges up too.
Naturally I'll only run the engine for 100 miles or so then replace the oil and filter again, but should I do something with the pump?
The oil light goes out instantly.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Regards
Fred

you can get the gasket for the oil pump easily, but I don't know how easy it will be to put the pump back in once you get it out . if you do make sure the gears line up correctly or it could be a very costly mistake.

if you have the pump out it's a good time to use a flashlight and check your pump drive gear and whatnot also.

I would run the oil for 100 miles like you said, and see how it looks when you drain it. No sludge = good to go. Enjoy your baby!

Would I be remiss to suggest using one of those engine cleaning solvent products? I have used them before on car engines and felt they were to good effect.

I'd get some really cheap oil, run 100 miles change it, run 100 miles, change it, and most likely after a few times it'll be very clean.

You could try seafoam in the oil for 100 miles, I've done it with cars, not sure if it would hurt anything in the bike, I don't think it would.

6 years of sittin....... I would be more concerned with the seals dry rotting. Milky or sludgy oil is common on these bikes duel to improper washing techniques. Also living in a really humid area can cause it sometimes. Just drain , change, run and repeate....... Once should be enough for these small engines.

Not sure if it's good for our motors, but I know of seafoam being used in the oil of car motors to clean them out.

Seafoam is an all-around great product and I would not hesitate to use it in the oil as a solvent to help clear the oil passages

I have never heard of seafoam and am not sure if it's available in New Zealand, but will check it out.
Thanks for the suggestions.

btw, oil that comes out looks sludgy in a bad coffee way, slight red tinge to it. That's natural on the 9R

Foamy, milky is bad.

Two short run oil changes is what I'd recommend.

Also, you should know that the '03's weak link is the oil pump gear. It breaks and drops into the pump, hopefully, shutting it down and costing lots. (Hopefully, because there's less damage if it does just that.)

There are updated parts to fix that.
