for those of you that have done it, did you use an actual torx wrench or am I good with something else?

I've heard of using allen heads, but I'd think they'd be prone to stripping the bolt

and since I have the bike in my dining room I've decided to switch to my blue rims instead of the amber lol(on this fine friday night none the less)

Yeah, I wouldn't think anything else other than a torx would work. When I took mine off I broke my cheap torx, too...had to go buy a quality one to break all the bolts loose.

Yeah.... only use the right size of the right tool. You don't want to learn that the hard way. Harbor Freight has torx sets.

good to know, it's slightly disassembled at the moment and awaiting more teardown tomorrow. trying to see how long it takes the vater to finally freak out on me for bringing it into his dining room lol

Just took mine off a couple days ago, and like mentioned you HAVE to use a quality torx bit otherwise it will snap. I broke one on my rear sprocket last year, so I had to go out and buy a quality set.

When I changed mine, I heated the center of each bolt head with a mini propane torch flame. This weakens the Locktite or whatever adhesive the use to hold the bolts. After heating the bolts were easier to remove.

Yes use a quility torx cheaper ones strip way to easy and I put the socket in and give it a whack with a hammer helps to kinda break the lock tight loose or like mmcn49 said heat them

You can go to autozone and just get the one socket. I bought three eighth socket so I could use racket. Do it SLOW! If you rush your just going to strip the head. Also you you can reuse everything, I cleaned dirt and stuff. No problems, what kind of rotors. I got the galfer wave rotor my awesome wife bought me(buell wife).....its bad ass, and it makes a cool sound when you squeeze the brakes. Good luck, be careful.

I haven't had to change my rotors yet, but I tried to pull one off the rear wheel when I was changing the tires, just so I didn't have to worry about bending anything, but my torx bit just started to twist so I left them on. I don't remember where I bought them, probably lowes/HD, so they weren't top notch stuff, but they were better than HF stuff. My front rotor is slightly warped and will need replaced before spring so I'll have to go get some better bits when the time comes.

Like mmcn49 says, use a mini torch to help loosen the bolts, also I have learned that once heated parts are loose let them cool first,I have taken parts off without doing this and had problems with them not going together right.

I didn't need to use any heat when I took my rotor off recently, and if you use the blue loctite when you put it back on you shouldn't need heat next time either...only the red calls for heat for removal. I did need a breaker bar though...
