Everytime I am sitting at a light and I see a car come up behind me I grab the brake and it flashes a couple times then comes on steady. I have never been rearended so I would like to think it works.
I do the same thing without the flasher. When someone is approaching, I pull the front brake as fast and as many times as possible.
This is another one of those MSF treasures. Give yourself enough brake distance for yourself and the guy behind you. When I'm in traffic and I'm engine braking, I usually give the rear brake a little pressure to light the lamp. Sometimes I'll just toe tap the brake, whatever it takes to alert the guy behind me that I'm slowing down.I tend to use engine braking quite often, something cars behind me wouldn't realize. My old SV would slow down from 60 to 30 faster than some people in cars would brake.
