Hello Buellers...

Hope'n to get some ideas from those of you with experience replacing the crank shaft oil seal.

FYI, I'm working on a 2008 XB12XT...

Here's the catch, I've been unable to remove the old seal using traditional pick-style pullers. I’ve also tried a more robust leverage-style tool. The force required to remove it is just too much – I inevitably reach a point where the contact slips and the tool comes out.... I'm paranoid that if I continue down this path I going to gouge the metal surrounding the seal (possibly jeopardizing any future seal).

So… I’ve heard of a few people that have driven self-tapping screws into the metal portion of the seal and managed to pull it using pliers… Not sure this is the route I want to go. I’d really appreciate any of your recommendations or success stories…

Would love to hear from anyone with experience removing this seal.

Many thanks guys!

Is this the seal behind the flywheel? Primary side with the crank bearing right behind it? i've removed many seals using a self tapping screw or two and it works well. Can't remember how i removed that seal when i did my build though. I think there's some space between the seal and bearing though, cause there's a spacer there. I'm pretty sure you can do the self tapper thing if you're careful not to drive it right into the bearing. Best of luck!

Chris,

Yes, the seal in-question is just in front of the crank bearing (and just behind the stator assembly) on the primary side of the engine case. There is some space between the seal and the bearing – If need-be I should be able to drive some screws into the seal and avoid contact with the bearings and/or crankcase wall. Just hoping to use this method as a last resort…

Thanks for your input, appreciate it!
