OK so I've finally gotten tired of looking at this nasty dent in my pipe and decided to do somethin about it.Been wondering if I could just build it up with weld and smooth her back out. I'm sure this isn't the best thing to do but It's gotta look better than the dent right? Here goes, time to play with the new TIG.Thought I'd share.

Ground down nasty weld.

Not quite as nasty welds to fill remaining low spots.

Now we're gettin somewhere. Still a couple lows though.

Last few lows welded.

Ahhh. No more dent!

Sanded the rest of the pipes to even out the finish.

And let her idle a while to get some color back.

So far the color appears to be coming back evenly,I was a little concerned about this bc of the different thickness where the welds are.I'll ride it tomorrow and see for sure and let ya know.

that sure is one way to do it, bonus points to you for creativity and raw solution brute forcing haha

Thanks, didn't wanna wrap them, and the wifey'd bitch for eternity if I ordered a new one. So Whadayado?
Break out the welder and burn sum ****.:p

The wife would eat your face off for a new set of pipes but not a TIG welder? Looks good anyway.[up]

Yep, tools to make a living with and bike parts, Totally different.

Took me about 2 hrs, stopping to take pics and all.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Good job, I don't have a welder or the skill but have done the same thing to my stator cover on my gsxr750 with jb weld! It came out awsome with some sanding and paint.

You should disconnect the battery and ecm anytime you weld on your bike.

Yes, definitely. Battery at least, On any vehicle.

The original pics were big enough to show the seat off and batt. unhooked. But I had to downsize them to post and, well, there went that.

Thanks again everyone, and for the rep!!

Ah, far from a jedi. But thanks.I'm actually a TIG rookie myself. I think my years of bodywork experience (careful grinding and knowing whats low and whats high) was more af an asset on this job than my welding ability.

I haven't had the tig too long, only been through a bottle and a half of gas with it(110 cf.) which doesn't seem to take too long! Maybe 15 hrs. experience with it so far. Been using migs for about 15 yrs. though. Way different, But i'm diggin it so far.

Out of the big 3, ( steel, stainless, and aluminum) stainless seems to be the easiest for me.

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, I've gone through almost 2 tanks of gas on the bike now since welding the pipe and the color is still coming back nice and even. I guess the thickness difference doesn't really matter b/c it will all reach the same temp eventually.

Not to step on your toes, but another option for dent removal is to take the pipes off, put some water in the dented one, and put it in a freezer overnight. The water expands and pushes the dent out.
