So here's my problem, please help. My 07 xb12r stator went bad a few months ago in Hawaii. Right when that happened my piston inspection plug blew out while riding down the road. I waited to fix any of it as I was returning to the mainland soon after.

I am back on the mainland, ordered the stator and plug. Replaced the stator and plug and gave it an oil change. Rode home (about 25 miles). When I got off the highway the bike started sputtering and cut out and I heard a knock. I pulled over and took off the oil filler cap and oil/gas poured out like it was being poured from a jug. After i let it pour the bike restarted and I rode it about another quarter mile (i was only about a half mile from home) and still her the knocking and it sputtered and quit again. after it sat for about 5 minutes it started again.

The knocking was a lot like the kind of knock you hear when you change the oil and crank it for the first time antil the oil cycles through the system.

Is my engine screwed or is it something less serious than a piston or cylinder? My dad seems to think it could be as simple as a injector seal. Ideas?

I called a local Harley shop and they quoted me at aroun $1800 for pistons and cylinders. Hope its not that.

Thanks,

Maybe you have a stuck open injector or one that leaks very badly? You can do a compression check on the cylinders for peace of mind.

WTF is a piston inspection plug? Is that your cheeky name for a spark plug or something? Maybe Im an idiot?

Lol.
I didn't know what it was either until it blew out. The service guy at harley even had to look it up. It is the large torx head bolt at the base of the pistons. Just blew out while I was riding and the harley guy even said he's heard of it happening a few times.

I'm confused[confused] How was oil pouring out if you just took the cap off? And if that much poured out, why did you attempt to ride it further?

How much oil did you put into the bike when you did the oil change?

All I can say is buy a used engine off of eBay for under 1k and tell Harley to go f### Themselves!

He must be talking about the plug you take out to check the static timing... I can't recall the name of it right off hand...

that's your timing plug, more like a over sized set screw (on mine)... had mine back off once, had oil splattered all over the right side of the bike, got lucky it was still there considering only had two threads holding it in. Removed, cleaned, added Loctite, re-installed...no issues since

That's what I was thinking but you can only see the flywheel. You can't see the pistons.

We're talking about the same part then ...Thats what you need to be able to see when you pull it out ...it has the tdc marks for each piston marked onto it ...you pull that plug and turn the motor to tdc on the front piston to set your static timing ....

Weekend I took the cap of I guess there was so much fluid in the reservoir that it was building up pressure. I know I put a little took much oil in it but not that much. I tried to ride it again because I was only a half mile from home and didn't want to be stranded. I think I'm going to drain the oil and refill it and see if that's the problem. I'm hoping my dad overfilled the oil and that created the problem.

Thoughts?

Wouldn't hurt ... Worst case scenario you just put fresh oil in the bike and eliminate one possibility ... [up]
