When you change the oil on the primary is it the same as changeing transmission oil?. I don't want to assume or neglect anything and this clarification will help me and maybe others.

I change it every time I do the oil. Seems to run great and only takes one more quart of oil an about five more minutes

Yes, the Transmission is really the Primary (Nickname)as so to speak. Make sure to warm up the bike(5)mins.will do when you get ready to change the fluid on any part of the bike.Get it as level as you can w/out tipping it over the other way.It takes Exactly One Quart for the Change no the Tranny. If you have it on the kick stand it will have a small amount still in the case possibly a Quarter a pint.A pitt Stand works good for any motorcycle.Keeps it level and safe for some of the work needed from time to time. Amsoil 20/50 works well in these Air Cooled Engines oil tank. The 75/90 Valvoline Synthetic gear oil Affordable, OR other will work well in the Primary(Transmission).Be sure to not overtighten the Drain Plugs just good and snug.Watch how you remove the 3 screws and gasket for this work.Don't kill the Clutch inspection covers(3)screws,by overtightening and put the gasket back Exactly like you removed it.If you don't have a new one available.Take your Time you will learn the process as you go along. Take notes if need be.There are Manuals at the top of the page for the bikes. Some of the information is is still revalent to all the bikes,on some areas.post up when can.*Jimi

Thanks jimijeans I've done it before but was just making sure that I was'nt missing something else that needed to be changed. I was just a little concerned over the Primary/Transmission lingo used.

I swear i can't spell today!Primary is really the nickname to include the whole area of the bikes Transmission this is why they call it the Primary Cover, that goes over the Whole Transmissions inner working parts.Clutch Basket/Primary Chain/Rotor & Stator(like an Alternator) the older like WW1-or the Pedal type, and some bikes had outer charging systems-anyway it's now all in one area on the newer models. This Was Absolute Genius from 75 or so years ago, it kept the transmission seperate from the engine. If something happened on the Battlefield it could be fixed easily and the Engine would still be intact.Flying Bullets not included! The Term Primary started a long time ago as a nickname that the Older Harley bikers for some reason still use to this day.AS so do WE,but archangel is right it's about the gearing and the drive system used as a complete whole term meaning the transmission.I gotta ask my uncle tomorrow when he gets to the shop how that got started. He's been working on Harleys and Indian Bikes here in the shop for over 49 years.I pretty much run the family shop but He's the Boss. Anyhoo,Check out the many things this Forum has to offer.Manuals at the top of the page will help also.Take your time learning your bike, and Ride Safe.*Jimi[smirk]
