ECM spy and direct link issues

So my xb12r came with a direct link tuner cable and software disc. I had to purchase a serial port to USB adapter. Tried two laptops cause I have a Mac I had to try my buddies and I bought one from Craigslist cause I needed the windows xp. But they both had windows 7. Which is ok cause I found a plugin at direct links website technoresearch.com . Well plugin didn't work for either computers. Software kept saying no plugin. Every thing was plugged in and done properly. So I downloaded ECM spy. Seemed to open up fine but the USB wasn't reading for some reason. Kept searching for COM1,2,3. Nothing. Bike was on. USB adapter was getting signal from bike. I'm clueless and running out of time.
