So my bike has been puking oil around the starter and through the transmission breather, and it wasn't until yesterday that I realized my primary was FULL of oil (we're talking more than 2 quarts), and the engine side had less than one (I guess I found the reason for the knocking sound...).

From the info I can gather, the crankshaft seal could have gone bad and is letting engine oil being pumped into the primary. Can anyone confirm that theory? I'm tearing down the engine anyway for other maintenance stuff during the winter but I'd like to fix that problem before I get to the other stuff.

Also, has anyone done it? I read about some special tools being needed (locking bar, seal puller, spacer), but I can order those online...

Yeah most likely a seal. Dont really have to buy the special tools. Use a brass door hinge to wedge between the gears. A pick to get the old seal out, PVC to drive the new seal in.
