Not sure if this is the correct area to post this sort of question, so mods feel free to move to the XB area if need be.

As some of you know I had a stand bolt strip in the block of my 04 XB12R. I plan to get hold of a knackered engine and just use the 2 halves of the crankcase and move all my engine and tranny parts over. I live in the UK so parts aren't so easy to get hold of.

The questions I have are:
1) what parts should I replace as a matter of course, such as gaskets? Part numbers would be helpful if they are to hand.
2) What is the compatibility of the crank cases between models, ie can I use any 03-07 9 and 12, or am I limited to something more specific?
3) Do I really need any specific tools? Again links would be very welcome if possible.
4) Am I a complete idiot for deciding to do this or is it feasible? I can spanner but I've never attempted a rebuild or engine guts transfer.

Eagerly awaiting the usual awesome responses :)

Just to let you know that the 07 case/tranny are different than the other years learned that one te4he hard way hope that helps you out. Other than that not sure.

I bought the complete engine gasket kit from Harley. Came with every gasket needed.
You'll need a steel bar to wedge the primary and crank sprockets in order to loosen the nut.
You do not need to remove the front belt pulley to split the cases.
Be careful when using another right hand case. There is a number stamped into it (2 in my case) The pinion bearing for the crank is very specific and close tolerance. Make sure you are using the correct race. Download a manual here and check out the crank bearing section- it's quite involved.
Best of luck.

+1 [up] to both of ya. Still waiting for my new crank halves to show up on eBay. I have no idea what number is stamped in my case either...
