exhaust w/o ecm modification

So in short I am curious if a ECM tune is required for the addition of a d&d exhaust even if the bike seems to be running fine with the stock ecm. What kind of problems can this cause later on in the bike's life.
It's a 2008 12r if that matters..
I have read a lot about the ecmspy but it seems over my head. I am starting to think the extra $$ for a programmed ecm may be worth it it.

you can do with out it but it runs better with it.ebr ecm will make a big difference.i can get you an ebr ecm for around 150.00 if your interested.

You'll be ok if you leave the stock air filter it. It'll help to restrict the air flow while still letting the exhaust make the noise you want. You'll probably get some popping on deceleration. Someday you'll definitely want to upgrade to a new ECM, because if you're already gonna spend all that money on an exhaust you might as well spend the rest for the ECM so the bike can run even better, but you'll be fine for now.

As far as long term, if you were to run the exhaust and new filter with the stock ecm you'd be running the engine lean and could potentially cause some damage. Engines run hotter when there's less gas, if I'm remembering that correctly.

You'll be fine until you really want to spend the money on a race ecm or until you get the hang of modifying the ecm yourself.

Just make sure to re-set TPS at least every 3rd fill up w/the key switch, run premium fuel & Tell Erik Buell Racing what your exhaust is/ when you are ready for the next step.You can run a K&N filter (IF) theres no changes to the stock air box. My brother Has an XB12r 2008 over 16ooo.mls w/ amsoil fluids, econo/Drummer,Stock Ecm,K&N air NGK plugs and no problems. I service & do any work needed so take your time and Enjoy. I have an XB12R also. I am a Motorhead and Well I may never be completely done. [up]

Yep, Dave Has some Do It yourself (Daves DIY videos all in one thread)is whats its called .)03/04/05/06/07 -should all be the same for TPS re-set as for-08+ The key switch method works ok I use my laptop just so i can watch whats going on. Stevenc 150 has the same help for that. With lots of others as well.[up]
