So, for the sake of my hearing, I'm switching from a Jardine back to a stock muffler (yes, i am fine with the loss of hp/tq if it means i won't go deaf). I bought the bike used and it came with a Jardine, but got a stock muffler off ebay.
So here's the dilemma: the stock muffler has some rust on it, not a lot, but significant. Should I.....
a) just run it like that and not care
2) sand off the rust spots and coat it with hi-temp paint
tres) strip the paint off the pipe and re-coat
IV) get it jet-hot ceramic coated (they do a sand-blasting and thermal degreasing prior to coating)

**aside: one concern I have is that the interior rust will eventually eat the pipe away from the inside and the only option that addresses this is IV

what say ye, buellxb?

if the stock pipe is the one your sure your going to stick with i would go with jet hot if not sand and repaint.thats my 2c

With Anrkizm95, if you plan to keep it just drop it off to get it ceramic coated and be done with it. I did this with a past pipe and it only cost $40 and all I had to do was drop it off and pick it up, No work or mess [up]

$40?!?!?! Where? Jet-Hot quoted me $100-130+shipping

I'm with xtreme get it professionally ceramic coated.
that would be my first choice ,
my second choice would be if cost is issue I would sand off all rust and paint it with VHT Flameproof silica-ceramic coating Header Paint in black(or whatever color you like, i painted my old buell race pipe with it and looked good with it), its only $8 a can at any auto parts store, would only take 2 can for about 3-4 good coatsof it for good finish, but you may have to repaint in few years, and it probably wont look as good as the pro ceramic coating like on Xtremes' old race pipe he had done.

this is the VHT header paint

NNNNOOOOOOO get a better quality exhaust and tune to match , i love the way the race kit sounds and i dont allways ride with a helmet like if im close to the beach ect. and its not loud enough to be to much, nothing like jardine but race kit better performance .....just say **** the stock pipe
and get somethin else

the only place to get a race kit is ebay, and have you seen what they are going for lately?

reason?

id go back to the stocker. as a matterof fact; i did after 2 years of self-inflicted torture from my D&D.
but now i'm putting an edelbrock under it. i guess i can't decide ...

you might have luck with hacking up the stock pipe to your liking, if at all.

and i havent had good results with header/exhaust paint. try some kinda coating if you wanna leave it on the bike all year

A place local to me quoted $18/ft for ceramic coating on my headers...guessing its about 5' or so?

Have you ever considered a Hawk muffler? I am pleased with mine, and Randy is one of the most decent people on the planet.

yeah, he's a super nice guy
how loud are the hawks comapred to stock and jardine?

Tremclad high heat black spray can and you're done.

Rust from the inside (?) is going to happen whatever you do to the outside. If that is really a problem, you'll have to cut it open and fix inside which really sounds like a hypochondriac issue to me.

I guess the product is called Rustoleum now.

I have a video comparing the hawk and stock on youtube. If you want it i'll post it up on this thread. The hawk is deeper than the jardine and isn't as loud. I've had all three and the hawk is by far my favorite.

Yep, It's Time for a Hawk. Randy can make a few adjustments and you're set just make sure you let him know what to do.AND no rust!!:D
