Hey all!

New to the board (one recent post asking about x1 vs xb).

I thought I was a Lightning man, but there seem to be a few Firebolts for sale around here.

I like the look of the 'Bolt, but can someone describe how its riding position differs from the Lightning? I don't want to crouch like a rocket. Been there, done that.

Thanks in advance for you reply!

Yea I have had both, lightning and bolt. The lightning is a more comfortable ride if that's what you are looking for. But I love them both.....I have a 04 firebolt now and looking to add another lightning this spring! !!!!!!! Can't just have one:D

Hey guys--thanks for your reply. :)

Is there firm wrist pressure on the lean, or is it mostly forward posture? I could probably deal w forward-ish ergo but I'd rather not put pressure points on the wrists.

I swapped my GSXR for a 2009 Firebolt and have found it more comfortable than the Suzuki and not felt any pressure on the wrists.

i find the position of my firebolt better than the lightning. the lightning is very up right. i like the lightning look overall (hence why ive owned two), but for me it needs the firebolt top tree.

teh firebolt is no way as far leaned over as any jap sportsbike... so if you are thinking GSXR, CBR, etc... then teh bolt is a nice compromise between that and the lightning.

i just got back from a ride this morning. did about 220klms, and was actually saying to the missus how the bolt is more comfortable than the CR ( i have the 09 with clubmans).. and i think its cause the bolt hbars are a little narrower as well and that makes a difference for me anyway.

and remember too, that with correct riding technique and good core strength, then you should have no weight on your wrists anyway.

I find the Bolt's riding position to be very comfortable. There is a forward lean but it's not extreme, so long as your not really short (I'm 6'0, just for reference). I did feel the foot pegs were a bit high for my tastes (33" inseam) so I bought a set of pegs for a Lightning. That drops them 1" and they're only $40 brand new on EBay. This made all of the difference for me. Now I consider the riding position to be near perfection. The slight forward lean is perfect for the highway (where I do most of my riding) but it's not so extreme as to be a pain aound town. If you ride almost entirely in town the lightning is the better setup but the Bolt is far from being "punishing" either.

That's what I was gonna say. You should be holding the bike with your legs and not really supporting yourself with your arms. If you do a lot of riding where they're not moving much, the position might get tiring. If you do back roads and riding where you're not sitting still, you'll never think anything of it.

Also, keep in mind a lot of parts are interchangable. Like chaos said, the lightning pegs are lower and will bolt right up. Some people put lightning tails on their firebolt for a mixed style that'll give you more seat options, and with a little bit of trimming to the fairing you can even fit a lighting top triple clamp on the bike so you can use the normal upright handlebars but still have the styling of a firebolt.

would a tank bag help to support your chest weight on a bolt? I have an 07 and havent ever noticed being in pain. Just my $0.02

I love my bolt. The extra wind protection is nice in the colder times of the year. Its nice to be able to tuck in when its 10 degrees out in the morning. Its better than jap bikes, but its still a forward position.

Man this thread has been very helpful. Seriously--many thanks for all your replies. Though now I'm more confused about which bike to get. :p

my old bolt was not as aggressivly styled as my cbr is... I found it to be much more comfortable. I am not a fan of sitting upright on a bike though... I feel like I stand out more because I am tall...dont know how to describe.

I have owned my 2005 XB12R Firebolt since april 2008, i have put about 3300 miles on it since, & 95% of that riding was my hour and half ride to work each day (90miles one way) I love the lightnings and wanted one
(xb or X1) but knew my ride to work would keep me in the wind alot of the way and i thouught the firebolt with the front fairing would help cut down on the wind . i really cant compare between the lightning and the firebolt . but i can tell you i love my firebolt and how it feels to me and how comfortable it is when i ride it right and when i dont ride right, position wise.
when i first got it (it is my first bike) my hands would get sore from not being in a good riding position and not using my abbs(core). but I asked for how to keep from my hands from gettting sore and the best riding postions for riding the firebolt. for long rides, no matter what, i learned that you have to switch postions from using your abbs(core)& not to lean on hands and NOT to use your arms to support your self (at least not for very long ), and that tucking in and laying down on the airbox keeps me out of the wind (and thats lets me rest my abbs(core)too for long rides)also use your legs to help support to a degree , also ways use legs when turning but you know that. and being only 5'6" it helps me along with good gloves with padded in the palm below the fingers and along the bottom of the hand above the wrist. maybe it's me being short but i mostly sit close to the airbox when riding in upper(almost upright)position, & then sit further back sometimes when tucked in to stretch out my back and abbs.
i hope thats helps and my explaination is understandable. checkout some of the riding postion threads too i learned alot from them too. i will see if i cant find a few for you.

The fairing is really nice to have on the firebolt. The lightning gives you a feel of more leverage, but to me, it's just not as fun as hanging off the side of a firebolt. Low bars + fairing = WIN

I have a 2006 R6 and my Lightning I really don't even ride my R6anymore. The lightning is so much more comfortable and fun for that matter. As far as the windscreen and how much difference it makes it's not that much as you would think one day last year I took both out at 120 mph back to back runs on the highway. There is a little difference but not enough of a factor to choose one over the other. As for being bent over like on the Firebolt it's not comfortable at all on longer rides or stop and go traffic. I did it on my R6 for 3 years and like I said since I got the Lightning I really don't ride it anymore. Also its hard on the wrist. Plus there is a lot more seat options for the Lightning than the bolt.

I had no problem riding my Bolt 350+ miles to phoenix and back again. Riding position was fine. Better wind protection than Lightning for sure. My 675 Daytona and my old 916 Duc are/were much less comfortable. Well, 675 not nearly as much as the 916 for sure. My wrist never hurt but right hand fatigue would be a factor so I bought a Vista Cruise throttle lock and it's so easy to put a ton of miles on the bolt.

I own a 03 firebolt. I was thinking about getting a lightning for my gf. There both nice bikes. Can go wrong with a v-twin! ;)
