while we're at it...how will i know when it's time to bebuild the forks? any ongoing maint. needed?

I put my bike up on a pitbull stand and in about 5 minutes the bike started to lean over to one side. one fork is much softer then the other. I think its from being on its side stand all the time. so I am going to start parking mine upright

usually you know when they start leaking.

i bought the seals and bushings from american sport bike when i did mine. you will also need 1qt of fork oil.
you need dust seals, oil seals, inner and outer bushings. 4 parts per fork.

its very easy if you have some mechanical ability. if you have trouble with something like changing your oil id be careful with this. also i made my fork spring compressor and fork seal driver but you dont need a driver. a fork spring compressor you will need but they sell different types and some are pretty cheap. then i used a turkey injector with a piece of tubing on the end to set the fork oil to the proper level.

i watched these videos before i did mine. quality kinda sucks but very informative. these forks are from a ducati but they are the same showa 41mm forks used on our bikes. if you have a newer bike with the 43mm forks it will be slightly different but im guessing not much.

thx kona very helpful. ill probably do this at the end of the season. suspension feels good now, but i want to stay ahead of the game.

i have an 03 xb9s what size forks are those? I think I may just have a vaccum lock so I was going to open the left one and just put it back to see if that helped. i want to buy a steering damper

I'm waitin on seals right now. Im changing mine cuz they were leaking bad. (left side only). Decide to get the forks powder coated at the same time. I'll post pics as soon as I Get em done. And figure out how to post pics.

im in the process of doing mine right now. I ordered all the seals from Al at american sportbike. I also watched the videos posted above. They are pretty simple to take apart and put back together.

I bought the spring compressor from Traxxion

and i also bought a seal driver from this "100hd88" on ebay. He makes them to your spec the day you place the order. Fast turn-around and quality product.

it was worth every penny and worked great.

and I powdercoated them when they were apart-

i forgot to add if your just changing the seals and bushings you can leave the damper rod assembly in the fork tube, this is the hex bolt in the very bottom. it does not have to come out. i forget if he took them out in the video or not.

Hi i am new !

Pur Pony can you help me little, i am also want do powder coating. But i don now how to take of aluminum pieces(in your photo where the buell logo ), from the end of cylinder???

defender: kona gave you excellent info and links as usual. may i add that each fork takes approx. 16 ounces of either 7.5wt. or 10wt. QUALITY fork oil. use a brand name oil. All Balls has the seals and both bushings. i am not underestimating you mechanical aptitude or minimizing your capabilities but as with anything else in life, these are very tricky to do if you've never had cartridge forks apart before. and yes...when seals start to leak it's time to rebuild them. if you don't feel comfortable doing them you can always remove from your buell, take to local shop that will do them for you. bike shops getting very slow this time of year and happy for the work. hope that helps. merry Christmas!

lunatic got trolled by an old thread ;) still relevant information though, people ask how to rebuild forks once a week i think. all balls doesnt sell the bushings for the forks though.

Ive never seen those removed from the legs. If i were you id just mask the lower fork leg and leave it attached to the casting. You have to remove the adjustment valve and damper rod assembly before powdercoat anyway due to temperature.
