So I might have done a no no. I had the front and rear wheel off to get the tires replaced and when putting the front wheel back on I noticed the rotor had some play in it. I figured this is what must have been causing the slight ticking noise i was hearing before when braking so i snugged them up. Well it had something to do with it........ Now its so bad I Can't ride the bike. Very loud and you can feel. Checked rotor and now its loose again. Is there a special way to align them ?

The rotor is a floating design.

You may want to remove the front rotor and replace the following rotor components.

Rotor Front Brake Springs. (Behind the rotor inserted into wheel. Supplies outward pressure on rotor.)
Rotor Drive Bushings. (The square nut like washers that contact the notches of the rotor and rotor bolt.)
Rotor Washers. (The square washers behind the rotor drive bushings. Look like square clips, very thin.)

Make sure you clean everything before assembly. (A little brake dust causes a lot of different noises.)
Torque the Rotor Bolts to 25 ft lbs.

slight ticking noise
MIne has had this since installing Lyndall Gold pads(3 years ago).
It is very slight and I do NOT feel it in the bars. Its just the pads I use.
With a full face helmet at riding speeds I never hear it.

Thats how mine sounded before I was an idiot and just tried tightening them up. Thanks for the help ! Love the amazing amount of info on this forum!

at least you can admit you did a no no. Be patient and I'm sure you'll get it figured out. Good luck

Hi Schwendy

I don't fully understand "snugged them up"................but this does not sound like a good idea.
I case you really tightened the rotor bolts considerably above the recommendations by Buell I am very concerned about your front wheel. I have a few years experience with the XB and I would like to suggest you ask around who in your area is regarded as a good Buell workshop. Your front wheel should be looked at by somebody who has experience.......................that would be step one for me..................otherwise remove the rotor make some pictures of the wheel mounting points and post them here.........the rotor most likely has excess play around the Floaters and these are most likely worn........they should be square.................in cases of ecess wear they beome round and turn inside the rotor grooves.....................that would really bad...........

I would not use the original rotor mounting kit. Neither would I use the original rotor. Check the EBR website and buy a new rotor and the mounting kit from EBR (it by the uses a flat spring and you do not need to keep anthing of the old stuff........................just bin it). The screws need to be tightend according to the EBR Instructions.............the kit comes with a drawing of how to install the floaters and the washers/spring. The EBR stuff is much better than the original parts I have these parts in various different flavors since 2009 on my bikes.

I gave them each about an extra 1/4 turn. I didn't bottom them out or excessively tighten them. Just snug. I am mechanically inclined. I am use to building cars. So i didn't even think about it being a floating rotor. I was in the middle of getting all the maintenance done and going over everything. I took the rotor hardware off and cleaned it all and tightened them to 25 ft lbs in a star pattern. Took it for a quick spin and no noises and smooth. I still might replace the pads rotors and hardware though. Just because I plan on putting a lot of miles on it soon.

Now if the sunshine would come back here in minnesota I could ride it. It's been snowing the last 4 days again. [sad]

Glad to hear you got it figured out. I hear ya on the snow crap I'm in nd i did get out for a ride this morning before the big storm hits I'm tired of having to ride between snows and in temps no more than 30°
